Donald Trump’s Campaign Strategist, Friend Roger Stone “Fires” Him After Megyn Kelly Comments: Details

Donald Trump has parted ways with his political strategist, Roger Stone.

After years of eliminating Celebrity Apprentice contestants with the phrase "You're fired!," did Donald Trump just get a taste of his own medicine? The presidential hopeful, 69, claimed to CNN on Aug. 8 that he had axed his campaign strategist Roger Stone, but Stone quickly countered that Trump didn't fire him. In fact, he says it was quite the opposite.

In the statement released to CNN, Trump's spokesperson explained, "Mr. Trump fired Roger Stone last night. We have a tremendously successful campaign and Roger wanted to use the campaign for his own personal publicity. He has had a number of articles about him recently and Mr. Trump wants to keep the focus of the campaign on how to Make America Great Again."

Within minutes, Stone tweeted his version of events. "Sorry @realDonaldTrump didn't fire me- I fired Trump. Disagree with diversion to food fight with @megynkelly away core issue messages," Stone wrote, adding, "Very anxious to see the direction of the Trump campaign from here and the next round of credible polls. #StandBy."

The "food fight" in question began during the Aug. 6 GOP debate, when moderator and Fox News correspondent Megyn Kelly asked Trump about derogatory names he has called women, including Rosie O'Donnell. Trump later mused that Kelly had "blood coming out of her eyes. Blood coming out of her wherever." (Trump later clarified that he was referring to her nose, and added that anyone who inferred otherwise was a "deviant.")

Stone, a longtime political advisor and close family friend of Trump, also appeared on CNN on Aug. 8, to clear the air about his exit from the campaign.

"I have nothing but admiration and respect for Donald Trump," Stone noted. "I resigned largely because I thought I was having no impact and the campaign has been diverted from those big picture issues that catapulted Trump to the No. 1 position in the polls, which I thought was counterproductive."

Stone, who said he resigned by sending Trump an unanswered note, also addressed Trump's claims that he was using the billionaire's campaign for publicity via Twitter, writing, "The notion that I somehow need @realDonaldTrump to get publicity for myself is really ,really funny- he should do a google NEWS search."

This isn't the first time Trump's campaign has suffered as a result of his actions at this week's GOP debate (and offensive comments post-debate). He was uninvited from the RedState conservative gathering on Saturday, Aug. 8. Trump then proceeded to bash organizer Erick Erickson, tweeting that the event drew "small crowds" and adding, "People were very angry at EWErickson, a major sleaze and buffoon who has saved me time and money."
