Nope, still kickin’! A Facebook glitch informed the social media site’s users that they were dead on Friday, November 11. According to USA Today, the glitch in the system added a memorial note to the top of people’s Facebook pages, including CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s.
The note was the same for all users and read, for example, “Remembering Mark Zuckerberg. We hope people who love Mark will find comfort in the things others share to remember and celebrate his life. Learn more about memorialized accounts and the legacy contact setting on Facebook.”
The notice would then disappear from the page.
The social media platform does indeed allow users to “memorialize” their loved ones who have passed, so they can relive and share precious memories to their pages, but only after submitting a formal request.
According to Facebook, the company had planned to add the feature to the pages of deceased users, but accidentally displayed it on 2 million other accounts.
“For a brief period today, a message meant for memorialized pages was mistakenly posted to other accounts. This was a terrible error that we have now fixed. We are very sorry that this happened and we worked as quickly as possible to fix it,” a spokeswoman told The Guardian.
Some of those who had accounts affected by the glitch took to Twitter to laugh it off.
“Guys according to Facebook I’m dead now. On Twitter I’m still alive,” one person tweeted, while another joked about the intense past year: “Facebook marking us all as dead is peak 2016 tbh.”
