Welcome to Vatican City! George and Amal Clooney met Pope Francis during a trip to Rome on Sunday, May 29.
The Descendants actor, 55, is collaborating with the religious leader, 79, and his arts foundation, Scholas Occurrentes, to serve as an ambassador for one of their projects. Richard Gere and Salma Hayek were also honored on Sunday evening.
Internationally renowned human rights lawyer Amal, 38, looked stunning in a black lace Atelier Versace dress, which featured three-quarter sleeves and satin details. She paired the gorgeous look with a black Atelier Versace draped silk cady hat. George looked dashing in a suit and a white button-down shirt.

Earlier this week, the happy couple — who tied the knot in September 2014 — went on a romantic date night with friends at Dal Bolognese restaurant, overlooking Rome’s Piazza del Puopolo.
“They ate antipasto with Italy’s finest prosciutto, buffalo mozzarella cheese and culatello, a very fine cured ham from Emilia Romagna,” a staff member from the high-end Italian eatery tells Us. “All the food was washed down with an expensive wine from one of the most famous Italian wine producers, Gaja, particularly famous for top red wines.”
The pair spend much of of their time at George’s villa in Lake Como, where he filmed parts of his blockbuster film Ocean’s Twelve in 2004.
