Gwyneth Paltrow and Sara Foster are recalling their somewhat rocky road to friendship.
“Sara, why don’t you start by talking about how you and Gwyneth didn’t like each other,” Erin Foster quipped on the recent episode of the “World’s First Podcast,” to which Paltrow, 52, interjected, “No, she didn’t like me.”
Sara, 44, explained that she and Paltrow both had a mutual friend, but the Goop founder “would not come around a lot” because she was living in London.
“You were so famous. I mean, you still are so famous. It was shocking,” Sara recalled, adding that she’d walk in on Paltrow sitting on the sofa of their friend’s home and wonder how to handle the situation. “Like, what am I supposed to do? Am I supposed to say hi?”
Paltrow, for her part, claimed that she would get the “stink eye” from Sara. “Every time I was in the room, I swear to God. And, like, mean girl me to the max. Like, I was so intimidated,” Paltrow said. “This, like, most beautiful girl with the perfect body, like, 10 years younger than me, like, giving me the stink eye. I was like, so intimidated by her.”
When Erin, 42, asked if Sara was behaving that way because she was “intimidated” by Paltrow, she replied, “I think so.”
“I think if I’m really delayering and in this new era of being vulnerable and, like, a real human, I’m sure that’s what it was,” Sara admitted. “Here I am. I don’t know what I was, in my mid-20s, I guess that’s when we would have met. And I’m like, ‘I have nothing to show for anything. I’m just this person here. … So maybe my defense mechanism was to just be like, ‘Well, whatever. I’m not even that into you anyway.’”
Paltrow reached out an olive branch to Sara when their mutual friend threw a birthday party to celebrate their 30th.
“I was in L.A. from London doing Iron Man 2, I think,” Paltrow said of the 2010 film. “I said to Sara — I was trying to break the ice — I was like, ‘Are you going to this thing tomorrow?’ She’s like, ‘It’s not a thing, first of all.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, me lord. She hates my guts.’”
The pair ultimately became friends, with Paltrow recalling that she “really, really fell in love” with Sara — who gushed that her pal is a “very dear friend of mine, who I feel like is a sister in some ways.”
