Top Gun: Maverick actor James Handy’s suspected killer was reportedly seen on security footage after the alleged murder.
After Handy was killed on Wednesday, June 3, at the age of 81, local California police identified Michael Gledhill as a suspect after he was seen on Ring footage outside the actor’s house, according to footage obtained by TMZ.
Gledhill, 44, also allegedly called 911, per audio heard by People. Speaking with 911 dispatchers, the then-anonymous caller said, “I am the son of man. I just killed the man of sin.”
Gledhill, who is the son of Handy’s girlfriend, was arrested later on Wednesday, according to jail records viewed by Us Weekly. Bail has been set for $2 million.
Handy was an actor best known for roles in Top Gun: Maverick, Wolverine and Jumanji.
“With great sadness I can confirm that the gentleman who was attacked and killed on Wednesday in Tarzana was the actor James Handy,” Handy’s spokesperson told Us in a Thursday, June 4, statement.
Los Angeles police are currently investigating the alleged attack.
“The Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division, Valley Bureau Section is currently investigating a stabbing that resulted in the death of an 81-year-old man,” an LAPD statement read, after officers responded to a 911 call of “unknown trouble.”
The press release continued, “Upon their arrival, officers discovered 81-year-old James Handy in the front yard of the residence, unconscious and suffering from a stab wound to his chest. The victim was transported to a local hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics, where he was pronounced deceased.”
After Handy was transported to the medical facility, LAPD officials claimed that Gledhill “flagged down” other responding officers and said “he was the one they were looking for.”
Per the LAPD statement, Gledhill lived at the murder location with his mother.
“Detectives believe this is an isolated incident and there appears to be no danger to the public at this time,” police added in the statement. “Anyone with additional information about this incident is asked to contact Robbery-Homicide Division, Valley Section.”
Further details have not been revealed.
Handy was an acclaimed actor, also appearing on shows including Alias, The West Wing, NYPD Blue, Profiler and Melrose Place. He was also a military veteran.
“In 1965, I was drafted [and] I served in Vietnam with the 196th Infantry Brigade,” he recalled in a 2013 interview. “We were [part] of an operation … and we wound up getting into heavy combat for 27 days. We were in the field, and it was pretty horrific.”
