Longtime Scientologist John Travolta isn’t “interested” in watching Leah Remini’s new A&E docuseries, Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath, the actor told E! News at the 22nd Critics’ Choice Awards on Sunday, December 11.
In the eight-part series, Remini and other former Scientologists accuse the controversial church of spying on its members, sexual misconduct and more. (Karin Pouw, a spokesperson for the church, has vehemently denied the allegations in multiple statements to Us Weekly.)
“[Scientology has] been nothing but helpful to me for 40 years, through all my losses of my mother, my girlfriend, my son,” Travolta told E! News. “They never left my side, so why would I want buy into something that’s not what I feel?” (Travolta and wife Kelly Preston‘s 16-year-old son, Jett, died in 2009 from a seizure-related incident.)
The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story actor added that he’s “kind of” surprised Remini took part in the series, but he’s not affected by it. “As long as I get to still do it and my family gets to do it, I’m happy,” the actor told E! News.
Travolta’s lack of interest will come as no surprise to the King of Queens alum, who previously claimed that the actor and other current and former Scientologists are forbidden to reach out to her regarding her allegations. During an eye-opening Reddit AMA last month, Remini claimed that “the policy of the ‘church’ does not allow [other members] to come to [her].”
In an exclusive interview with Us last month, the actress said she’s considered an “enemy of the church” after exiting the organization three years ago.
“I’m hoping we start [a] conversation. I can’t do it alone,” she told Us of her decision to do the series. “When something is seemingly abusive, that needs to be looked into. I’m hoping I can do these stories justice and do a service to the people who are brave enough to speak out.”
