Love Is Blind couple Chelsea Griffin and Kwame Appiah have called it quits after four years of marriage.
“It’s heartbreaking to share that our marriage is coming to an end,” Chelsea wrote in an Instagram statement shared on Friday, May 15. “This is not the outcome I hoped for, and I entered this relationship with deep love, commitment and the intention of building a lasting life together.”
According to Chelsea, she eventually realized that she and Kwame were “growing in different directions.”
“I poured my whole heart into this marriage and wanted it to work until the very end, but lasting marriages require more than love alone,” she said. “I remain grateful for the life, memories and experiences that we shared.”
In his own statement, Kwame acknowledged that his and Chelsea’s “ultimate life goals didn’t feel aligned.”
“This isn’t something either of us ever imagined, and it’s been one of the hardest decisions to make,” he said. “As difficult as it’s been to arrive her, I believe it’s in our best interest considering amongst many other things, that our ultimate life goals don’t feel aligned.”
Nearly two months earlier, Chelsea and Kwame made a joint appearance at the LiB season 10 reunion.
“Visiting the pods had me reminiscing and in my feels … and now I’m crying. AGAIN🤧,” Chelsea wrote via Instagram in March . “Four years ago may not seem like a long time, but looking back this feel like lifetimes ago. I want these feelings, these moments, these memories locked in my heart forever 🔐🗝️❤️🥰, And I want time to chill out so I can never forget our journey, our love story. Love you Kwam.”
Chelsea and Kwame met sight unseen during Love Is Blind season 4, which aired on Netflix in 2023. Despite brief pod love triangles, the pair got engaged before meeting in person. Chelsea and Kwame were one of three Seattle-based couples to tie the knot in the finale.
“A couple days before I knew that I had to make up my mind because I felt like if I was on the fence on that day, I would’ve made a decision and regretted it later,” Kwame exclusively told Us Weekly in March 2023. “We went ahead and actually got a lease to an apartment in Seattle a couple days before … to know, like, ‘Hey, at least we’re willing to take this next step and see how it goes from here.’”
As for Chelsea, she needed to make sure Kwame “truly” wanted to marry her before she decided to do the same.
“I really wanted him to be authentic,” Chelsea told Us at the time. “And yeah, I mean, there were moments when we were contemplating our families, right? When he was contemplating his mother[’s reaction]. I mean, there is no greater gift and love than your mom. I understand that, and I believe that to be true as well. … Thankfully, you know, he made that decision and so did I.”
After saying “I do” in 2022, Chelsea and Kwame moved in together in Seattle and frequently shared glimpses of their newlywed life via social media.
“Two years ago today we stood up at that altar and said our I-do’s. It was so stormy and rainy that day but I still remember how during our vows the sun came out and shined upon us,” Chelsea wrote via Instagram in May 2024 in honor of the pair’s anniversary. “It was overwhelming with so many curious and hopeful eyes watching, but in that moment time stopped. It was just you and me in the world.”
She continued at the time, “My mind fast forwarded in a split second to us in 60 years, in the nursing home still laughing, singing AND coordinating our outfits HA! Now two years in, my love for you is deeper and more vast. You are my best friend and I thank god for you everyday in the happy times, tough times and everything in-between.”
