Let the celebrations begin!
President Barack Obama announced Wednesday that he now fully supports same-sex marriage — and Hollywood is thrilled.
“This is such a huge step forward in our country’s fight for civil rights and I hope that today this will give hope to so many young people across the country,” Kim Kardashian wrote on her website. “We’ve never had a president so supportive of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and today I am proud to be an American!! I’m so happy that our country is making history and moving forward. No more living in the past!”
Lady Gaga expressed the same sentiments, tweeting, “Obama, congratulations on being the first sitting President to support marriage equality. Feels like the future, and not the past.”
Neil Patrick Harris, who adopted twins with his longtime partner/fiance, David Burtka, in 2010, tweeted, “Bravo, Mr. President, and thank you.”
“Thank you President @BarackObama for your beautiful and brave words,” Ellen DeGeneres also shared on Twitter. “I’m overwhelmed.”
Obama told ABC News‘ Robin Roberts Wednesday that his position on same-sex unions is “evolving.”
“Over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me, personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.”
