Penelope Cruz is mourning the death of her father, Eduardo Cruz, Us Weekly can confirm. According to Hello! magazine's Spanish sister publication Hola!, he passed away in the early hours of Thursday, June 18, at age 62.
The brother of Eduardo's wife, Carmen Moreno, reportedly confirmed the news to Hola!. A cause of death has not been confirmed, but Hola! reports that he suffered a heart attack, and had a history of heart problems.
At the time of his death, Eduardo was in La Manga, Spain, where he lived with Moreno and their 3-year-old daughter, Salma. According to Hello!, he and his wife managed a beauty salon together.
Penelope, 41, is Eduardo's eldest daughter from his relationship with Encarna Sanchez. The couple also had a son, singer Eduardo Cruz, and a younger daughter, actress Monica Cruz.
The Pirates of the Caribbean star — who has two kids of her own with husband Javier Bardem — is said to have been very close with her late father, even bringing him to premieres when she was first starting out.
Though notoriously quiet about her personal life, Penelope did offer a small glimpse of her childhood in an interview with Allure in 2013. "There was always music, and everybody was dancing, sometimes naked around the house," she recalled of growing up in Spain. "Not hippie, but very free."
