Ah, the sting of rejection. Billy Ray Cyrus can’t catch a break as Vernon “Burnin’ Vernon” Brownmule, a down-on-his-luck, has-been country singer, in CMT’s new show Still the King.
As seen in the video teaser above, Vernon needs a gig to make some money — but he has burned every bridge he had in Nashville. Bar manager after bar manager laughs in his face and sends him on his way.
“Hell to the no!” one guy says, laughing when Vernon tries to negotiate a deal. “You got some brass balls, boy. Some big brass balls, I’ll give you that.”
“Earl, I’m uncomfortable with the way you stare at my crotch,” Vernon replies.
It turns out, Vernon is mad about the washed-up one-hit wonder stealing his father’s vintage Smith & Wesson Jesse James revolver and using it to rob a barbecue joint for “half a rack of ribs and some coleslaw.”
Vernon’s luck only gets worse from there, until he finds himself trying to bargain with a woman for a can of beer.
Cyrus, 54, talked with Us Weekly Video about the show on June 2, saying that his family already “loves” it. “Miley even came to a writers’ meeting early in the summer … Miley came in, had some thoughts. She said, ‘My dad walks around with his guard up all the time. Make him put it down, let him show you himself.'”
Watch the teaser above to see how Vernon handles rejection! CMT’s Still the King premieres Sunday, June 12, at 9 p.m. ET.
