How I Met Your … “What the Damn Hell?!” The series finale of How I Met Your Mother was satisfying and emotional for some — but, for many, many others, it felt like a sick April Fool’s joke and a betrayal of the true spirit of the beloved CBS comedy.
As Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) finally met The Mother, aka Tracy McConnell (Cristin Milioti), and proceeded to have babies, get married, and eventually sit by her side as she got sick and died, many fans were distraught that the writers had forgotten what the show was supposedly all about.
The CBS comedy assumed a very serious tone as Robin (Cobie Smulders) left the group after divorcing Barney (Neil Patrick Harris), leaving Lily (Alyson Hannigan) in tears.
Finally, six years after The Mother’s death, Ted tells his children the story of how he met her. But they quickly realize that their mother isn’t present for most of the story — and, indeed, his ultimate message was more about how much he truly loved “Aunt Robin.” Pulling the ultimate Ted Mosby, he rushes to Robin’s house, blue French horn in hand, and (ignoring her terrible bob and herd of random dogs) finally asks her out.
