‘Married at First Sight’ Recap: One Bride Refuses to Kiss Her Husband; a Groom Is Already in Love

It’s like rain on your wedding day! Actually, maybe rain on your wedding day isn’t so bad — just ask Lillian Vilchez and Tom Wilson. The Tuesday, August 2, episode of Married at First Sight picked up in the midst of a massive thunderstorm pouring down on their wedding ceremony. Though Lillian became briefly overwhelmed by all the “bad omens” (in addition to the weather, Tom had gifted her a pearl necklace, obviously unaware that in her culture pearls were bad luck for a wedding), she powered through and marched down the aisle as her gown and veil got soaked.

For what it was worth, Tom was thoroughly impressed by his bride’s willingness to do this, and the two had instantly good impressions of each other. As they exchanged vows with huge smiles on their faces, the sun literally came out. They kissed briefly to seal the deal, and Lillian said, “Oh, my God — give me a hug!” and went in for a warm embrace. After the ceremony was over, they popped champagne, and Tom admitted he felt there was a “weight off his shoulders.” Lillian took the private moment to explain why she hadn’t worn the necklace and assure him that she loved it and would be wearing it in the future. They were off to a great start, but not everyone’s wedding went as smoothly.

Heather Doesn’t Want to Kiss Derek

Unlike Lillian, whose panic passed as quickly as it came, Heather Seidel found herself “totally overwhelmed” as the time to marry approached. “What am I doing?” she asked in a voice-over. “This could be really, really, really bad.” In the nick of time, however, she pulled it together and made her way toward her future husband — which definitely pleased Derek Schwartz, who was immediately struck by his wife’s blond hair and blue eyes, noting that he was attracted to her “as soon as he laid eyes on her.”

When it came to wedding photos, however, Heather’s mood changed again. “There’s so much kissing going on,” she complained as the photographer kept instructing them to pucker up. Derek got worried that she didn’t want to kiss him, but she explained that she was annoyed because she doesn’t “like forced affection.” This seemed to calm Derek’s nerves — at least for the time being.

Nick Is a Dog Person, Sonia Isn’t

Like Tom and Lillian, Nick Pendergrast and Sonia Granados tied the knot outside, but their ceremony was blessed with sun. Things seemed to be going well as Sonia was described during the introductions as a “self-proclaimed daddy’s girl” and Nick as a “self-proclaimed mama’s boy.” Sonia was beaming as she read a quirky poem she had written to commemorate the occasion. “Roses are red. Violets are blue. I’m marrying a stranger, and so are you!” she laughed.

Though Nick seemed charmed by Sonia’s poem, things got a little tense after the ceremony. Nick did his best to put Sonia at ease, but she admitted things were “awkward.” Nick tried to break out of his shy nature and make small talk by promising his new bride that she was going to love his dogs. “I’m a little afraid of dogs,” she replied as Nick’s face fell. But Nick’s furry friends weren’t Sonia’s only worry: She was very concerned that he didn’t find her attractive because he hadn’t once said she looked nice during the entire day. Sonia’s fears were visible in their wedding pictures as she hesitantly posed beside her groom (which was rather ironic since Nick gushed to the cameras that he was “really attracted” to his wife but didn’t feel comfortable telling her that yet).

Lillian Is Confronted by Her Sister About Not Getting Included in the Bridal Party

Roughly an hour after meeting his wife, Tom witnessed some family drama between Lillian and her oldest sister, who was none too pleased that she had not been included in the ceremony. “Everything happened so quickly,” Lillian mumbled. “It wasn’t something I had a plan for.”

Her sister frowned and replied that she would have loved to have been a part of it, prompting Lillian to reiterate that it was just a timing issue before breaking down in tears. Tom realized it wasn’t his place to jump in, but did his best to comfort his new wife. Ultimately, Lillian and her sister hugged and made up, but it probably wasn’t the best first impression.

Sonia Complains to Nick’s Mom

While getting to know her mother-in-law, Sonia mentioned that Nick hadn’t said she looked pretty. Nick’s mom (who is clearly a big influence in his life) said that she would talk to him about that, which Sonia found very comforting and helpful. Later, when Nick commented on how pretty Sonia was, his mother piped in, “Did you tell her that? Because she told me you didn’t.”

A stunned Nick said he couldn’t say that yet. “I don’t know her well enough yet,” he argued. (Apparently, telling a woman she is beautiful is a very big moment to Nick.) When Nick chatted with Sonia’s mom, however, she didn’t mince words and asked straight-up what he thought of her daughter, forcing him to say she was beautiful. Sonia seemed very pleased by this admission.

Nick Says He Loves Sonia

In a weird turn of events, Nick did a total 180 and opened up about how he felt about his new wife. “I love her,” he said casually to a gaggle of stunned bridesmaids. After a brief pause, he explained that he might not actually be in love just yet, but added, “I might have found love at first sight.” Just to be clear: He didn’t feel comfortable telling her she was pretty, but he felt fine professing his love to a group of her friends. Noted.

The wedding night rolled around, and all three couples headed for their rooms. While everyone was insisting they weren’t going to consummate their marriages that evening, Lillian and Tom were certainly off to a good start in the bedroom, feeding each other chocolate-covered strawberries and making out like teenagers.
