Spider-Man: Brand New Day has reached a historic record that Avengers: End Game previously set.
The latest installment in the Spider-Man franchise earned a whopping $360 million in its domestic debut. After grossing that amount, Brand New Day, which premiered on Friday, July 31, achieved the biggest debut in U.S. box office history.
“Wow! 360 million thank-yous to all the filmmakers, actors, producers and to my colleagues at Sony, who created such a fantastic film and an exceptional marketing and distribution campaign,” Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman said in a statement to Variety on Monday, August 3. “Records are made to be broken, but we will take great pride in this one, for as long as we hold it.”
The last film to break this record was Avengers: Endgame in 2019. The Marvel film earned $357 million at the time. Brand New Day and Endgame are the only two movies in history to make more than $300 million in a single weekend.
Marvel films actually hold all four top spots for biggest debuts in history. Spider-Man: No Way Home ranks in third after earning $260 million when it premiered in 2021. In fourth is Avengers: Infinity War, which grossed $257 million in 2018.
Brand New Day stars Tom Holland as he reprises his role as Spider-Man/Peter Parker. The film picks up four years after No Way Home. Brand New Day follows the aftermath of Peter asking Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to cast a spell to erase any memory of him and his alter-ego in order to save the world. Peter anonymously protects New York City as Spider-Man while coping with the fact that his best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) and girlfriend MJ (Zendaya) no longer remember him.
While dealing with the consequences of his actions, Peter also goes through a spider-form of puberty that heightened his spidey senses and powers.
“For me, [I was interested in] this idea of exploring how a superhero develops over time,” Holland said on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast in July. “As a young kid, you go through puberty and your body changes more than ever. In my franchise, we never got to explore the really exciting time of any superhero movie where someone is figuring out how to use these new gifts. I always felt, like, I wanted to try and find a way to explore that. My idea is very different to what’s in the movie, and it evolved in the way that Peter evolved in a really big way.”
Brand New Day features cameos from Marvel stars including Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/Punisher, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova/Black Widow and Mark Ruffalo as the Bruce Banner/Hulk. The film also introduces iconic X-Men character Jean Grey, who is played by Sadie Sink.
