A Guide to Every 'The Walking Dead' Spinoff: From Daryl's Series to Rick and Michonne's Love Story

Always growing. Since The Walking Dead premiered on AMC in 2010, viewers have been looking forward to all the different takes on the zombie apocalypse. The horror series, which is based on a comic book series written by Robert Kirkman, introduced fans to a group of survivors. Their attempts to stay alive during the constant threat of attacks from zombies captured people's attention for nearly a decade. In November 2022, The Walking Dead came to an end — but not before using its finale to set up the future of the franchise. The last episode ended in a hopeful place as the Commonwealth entered a period of peace. Fans were surprised when the finale offered a glimpse at previously departed Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira). Executive producer Angela Kang praised the source material for allowing The Walking Dead to end on a high note. "Robert Kirkman’s vision of the comic is it closes a chapter and then another door opens. Because in some ways, it’s the zombie story that never ends," she told Variety at the time. "That sense of things are still happening in the background, and not everything has been fixed. But neither is it just sort of a nihilistic view of the world, where all these people try to survive for years and then fail. The intent is to close the chapter, but then, let people feel like there’s another turn to the story.” According to executive producer Scott Gimple, the plan to check in on Rick and Michonne was in the works for a while. “Andy and Danai and I’ve been working on that story for so long, we knew it inside and out,” he explained. “And we were just choosing the right place within that story, to get to the thematics that we needed to conclude the Walking Dead. What is the point of their circumstances, that shows them needing the strength that they draw from each other." Gimple continued: "We weren’t vamping. People will learn all about everything they see there. All will be revealed. The story behind the armor that Michonne is wearing is important. What Rick is doing is critical to his story and what he hears from the helicopter. There’s a real world that we got to peek into that people will have to live in several months.” Kang noted that Lincoln didn't want his appearance to overshadow the legacy of The Walking Dead, saying, "Andy was really clear, he did not want to be the last thing that the show ended on. He felt like that was not correct, because he had left. 'The Walking Dead'

The original series, which premiered in 2010, focused on a survivor group that was attempting to survive a zombie apocalypse. The Walking Dead had a large ensemble cast which included Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Jon Bernthal, Steven Yeun, Chandler Riggs, Lauren Cohan, Gurira, Melissa McBride, Emily Kinney and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

After 11 seasons at AMC, the horror series wrapped up in November 2022.

'Fear the Walking Dead'

The first spinoff of The Walking Dead took viewers to the beginning of the apocalypse. The prequel, which has starred Kim Dickens, Frank Dillane, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Lennie James, Colman Domingo and Mercedes Mason, explored a blended family who must deal with their society collapsing.

Fear the Walking Dead premiered in 2015 and will wrap up its eighth and final season in 2023.

'The Walking Dead: World Beyond'

In 2020, AMC debuted the second spinoff to its hit post-apocalyptic franchise. Based on the comic book series of the same name, The Walking Dead: World Beyond was set in Nebraska and took place a decade after the zombie apocalypse.

Following a short stint, The Walking Dead: World Beyond was canceled in 2021.

'Tales of the Walking Dead'

The third iteration is an episodic anthology series that is based on new and existing characters within The Walking Dead universe. The spinoff premiered in 2022 and is awaiting renewal.

Stars including Terry Crews, Olivia Munn, Parker Posey and more have been featured in the existing episodes.

'The Walking Dead: Dead City'

After originally being announced as Isle of the Dead, the spinoff based around Negan (Morgan) and Maggie (Cohan) was renamed to The Walking Dead: Dead City.

"The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror," the show's synopsis read.

The Walking Dead: Dead City will have six episodes in its first season, which is set to premiere on AMC in June 2023.

'The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon'

In 2020, AMC announced plans for a spinoff that would focus on Daryl (Reddus) and Carol from The Walking Dead. Later that year, the network confirmed that McBride would not be participating in the series.

"Melissa McBride has given life to one of the most interesting, real, human and popular characters in The Walking Dead Universe," an AMC spokesperson said in a statement about the shocking departure. "Relocating to Europe became logistically untenable for Melissa at this time."

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is slated to premiere in 2023.

'The Walking Dead: Rick & Michonne'

After previously teasing plans of a film series exploring Rick's adventures, AMC shifted the project into a six-episode series.

According to the logline, the untitled show will focus on the "epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world."

The upcoming spinoff is set to go into production this year and debut in 2024.
