‘Roseanne’ Reboot: All the Political Comments in the Premiere

A lot has changed in the two decades since Roseanne went off the air in 1997. So when the highly anticipated reboot kicked off on ABC on Tuesday, March 27, much of the original cast returned with plenty of new things to talk about, most notably the current political climate. Just a few minutes into the premiere, Roseanne Conner (Roseanne Barr) declared her support for President Donald Trump, all without even saying his name. Viewers then learned that Roseanne and her sister Jackie Harris (Laurie Metcalf) were in a feud over the latter’s respect for Hillary Clinton, Trump’s Democratic opponent in the 2016 presidential election. However, Jackie later admitted that she “choked” and voted for Green Party nominee Jill Stein because of Roseanne’s vocal disapproval of Clinton. Gender Fluidity

Roseanne’s young grandson Mark (Ames McNamara) likes dressing in girls’ clothing, which makes her husband, Dan Conner (John Goodman), worry about the boy’s safety at school. When Roseanne explained that Mark is “exploring,” Dan responded, “May the winds fill his sails and carry him to the boys’ section of Target.” The second episode further explored gender fluidity and included a heartfelt moment between Mark and his mom, Darlene Conner (Sara Gilbert).

Nasty Woman

Jackie made her grand entrance in a neon pink T-shirt that read “Nasty Woman,” the phrase that Trump used while referring to Clinton during a 2016 debate. It later became a battle cry for feminists. “What’s up, deplorable?” Jackie said when she arrived at the Conner family’s home.

Health Care

When Jackie saw that Roseanne had a slight limp, she said, “Why don’t you get that fixed with the new health care all you suckers got promised?” The titular character shot back, “It works good enough to kick your ass, snowflake!”

Gun Laws

Jackie then called out members of the Republican party for “wrapping yourselves up in the flag and clinging to your guns.” Visibly alarmed, Dan ran out of the room, saying, “I just remembered we’ve got kids in the house and I can’t remember where I hid our gun.” It turned out that the pistol was hidden in a container of ice cream in a freezer in the garage.

Russia Scandal

During dinner time, Jackie handed Roseanne a bottle of Russian salad dressing. “Oh, look, Dan. Russian!” Roseanne said while holding up the condiment and rolling her eyes. (Special counsel Robert Mueller is currently investigating claims that the Russian government interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.)

Pantsuit Joke

While chatting with her son DJ Conner (Michael Fishman)’s daughter, Mary (Jayden Rey), Roseanne said, “Aunt Jackie thinks every girl should grow up and be president, even if they’re a liar, liar, pantsuit on fire.”

National Anthem Protests

Just before having dinner, the family said a prayer — but not before Roseanne poked fun at Jackie once again, this time about the NFL players who have kneeled during the national anthem in protest of police brutality and racial inequality. “Let’s say grace. Jackie, would you like to take a knee?” she quipped.

Jobs and Economy

Roseanne told Jackie that she voted for Trump because “he talked about jobs” and “said he’d shake things up.” When asked whether she has watched the news to see how “things are worse,” Roseanne replied, “Not on the real news,” referencing Trump’s tweets about “fake news.”

Surrogacy

After Roseanne and Dan’s daughter Becky Conner (Lecy Goranson) announced that she was considering being a surrogate for a woman named Andrea (Sarah Chalke, who took over the role of Becky in the original series after Goranson’s departure), the couple expressed their concerns. When Jackie questioned Roseanne’s opinion, saying, “What happened to you? You always believed in ‘my body, my choice,’” Roseanne replied, “Right, and her body came out of my body so it’s my choice.”
