Kody Brown Says He’s ‘Not In Sync’ With Janelle, Robyn Breaks Down and More ‘Sister Wives’ Tell-All Part 2 Revelations

In the hot seat! Kody Brown got real about where he and wife Janelle Brown stand during the second part of the Sister Wives: One on One tell-all special on Sunday, February 6. During the episode, Kody, 53, sat down with Sukanya Krishnan to discuss his family’s recent struggles, many of which fans saw throughout season 16 of the TLC series. His three wives, Janelle, 52, Meri Brown and Robyn Brown, all did their own separate interviews on a variety of subjects — including whether they’re still intimate with their husband. Christine Brown, who announced her separation from Kody in November 2021 after 25 years together, also spoke about the family’s ups and downs. Part one of the tell-all was heavily focused on Kody and Meri’s rocky romance after the duo tied the knot in 1990. The twosome, who share 26-year-old daughter Mariah, have since hit a few bumps in the road, with Meri, 51, previously admitting that she and the Wyoming native haven’t been intimate in almost a decade. This week’s episode, however, shifted its focus to Kody’s relationship with Janelle, whom he spiritually married in 1993. The couple, who share six children — sons Logan, 27, Hunter, 24, Robert Garrison, 23, and Gabriel, 21, and daughters Maddie, 26, and Savannah, 17 — haven’t been seeing eye to eye on raising their kids and on what comes next for them. “In COVID, everybody has to make sacrifices. I feel like they’ve been the biggest jack wagons about what’s been going on,” Kody said during the Sunday tell-all, referring to Janelle and Christine. COVID-19 Fallout With Garrison and Gabe

“At times it did feel like I had to choose,” Janelle said of Kody’s strict protocols, which specifically caused issues between him and their two youngest sons, Garrison and Gabriel. “He thought I should move them out. Why would I want them to move out into the scary world of COVID exposure?”

The patriarch, who shares six children with Janelle, explained that he’s “not good” with 23-year-old Garrison and 21-year-old Gabe after butting heads over the family’s COVID rules.

“It’s like one of those relationships where we’ve gotta do a lot of work. I understand that these two needed their social lives. I totally get it. But in this case, COVID is different. It’s changed everything for everybody, and they want it all to be the same,” Kody said. “They need to realize that they should go and date that girlfriend, that’s fine, but you need to move out of the house so I can be home.”

After trying to lay down the law with his and Janelle’s boys by telling them to chose between their friends or getting to see him amid the pandemic, Kody is at a standstill with his sons.

“We need therapy. I need a sit-down with my boys and get something straight,” Kody added. “I’ve gotten to the point where I’m so angry about what happened that we’re not communicating. And I think they are too.”

Inside Christine and Janelle’s Bond

During season 16 of the TLC series, it appeared that Kody wasn’t pleased with how close Christine and Janelle had become, often referring to them as a “clique,” which neither woman understands.

“Maybe he doesn’t see how close I am to Janelle’s kids. I’m not trying to be [a clique]. She’s lovely to get along with and we kind of just get each other,” Christine said on Sunday’s episode. “If Kody is jealous … that would be kind of ironic. He’s really confusing and he’s so hard to get along with sometimes.”

Janelle, for her part, admitted that Kody’s “negativity is making [her] crazy,” noting that she grew closer to Christine over the years because she was “going where it felt like we were wanted.”

The Utah native explained that she wasn’t always closest to Christine, especially when she first joined the family. “Christine married Kody one year after I married Kody. It was a huge blessing because she was able to buffer,” Janelle said. “I thought she was a princess in the beginning. We hated each other.”

How Kody and Janelle Really Feel About Each Other

“We’re not in sync. We don’t partner really well, but we’re able to have a marriage that’s, if you will, lower in attachment,” Kody bluntly said about Janelle after nearly three decades of marriage. “We’re good friends. We get along well. It's more of a committed relationship.”

The head of the plural family said, “I love Janelle,” but he wouldn’t say that he was “in love” with her, claiming that she felt the same way.

“Look, we have a long-term relationship. We’ve been together almost 30 years. He’s my best friend,” Janelle said during the tell-all, noting "we're fine” when asked about their intimacy as a couple. "Kody and I are fine. I'm not going to share too much, but we’re fine."

Christine, for her part, praised Janelle for her strength and ability to stay with Kody without seemingly being intimate with him — which was one of Christine’s own issues with her former spouse.

“I don’t know if she needs Kody to fill her tank. What she needs from Kody is very different than what I ever needed from Kody,” Christine explained. “I think Janelle is a wicked awesome, strong woman and I think she fills her own damn tank.”

Christine Felt Like a 'Basement Wife'

Christine surprised her fellow sister wives when she confessed on the show that she felt like she was a “basement wife,” or the wife that loses herself while caring for everyone else. Looking back, Christine noted during the tell-all that those feelings built up over time.

“I chose to be weaker. I put everybody first most of the time. It left me running on empty and I asked him for help,” she said, claiming that Kody didn’t understand what she meant. “He’s like, ‘You’re just changing all the agreements.’ I said, ‘I’m overwhelmed,’ and he couldn’t help. Like, family came first all the time, 100 percent of the time.”

Janelle claimed that “there’s not usually [a hierarchy]," adding, "Not in our families. I feel like she’s coloring that experience with her perspective now. She never said anything.”

Robyn was equally as “surprised” by Christine’s comments, while Kody revealed on Sunday that he could kind of see where she was coming from after thinking back on it more.

“I’m carrying this load — and I’ve done it all these years — when you come in my family, this is a requirement I have, is that we’re going to be one family,” he said of how the plural unit is supposed to run. “That was like living in a fresh hell with Meri and Janelle. Christine lightened that burden. But then Christine [hit a wall]. What Christine has shrugged [in her responsibilities], Robyn was picking up.”

Robyn Gets Real About Her Place in the Family

"It’s been really, really tough for me. It’s been really painful,” Robyn revealed of finding where she belongs in the bigger group, especially after feeling like she has been blamed for a lot of Kody’s recent decisions.

The mother of five, who agreed that she has become an “easy target” for the rest of the family, broke down on camera when discussing how she’s perceived by the others.

"There’s been a lot of unsafe spaces. I just want people to see me as who I am. I want them to see that I love this family,” Robyn said. “That I'm committed to them. That I'd do anything for them. That I love them. And that I want the relationship.”

Christine, on the other hand, said Robyn isn’t the only one who has felt out of place in the past. “I think that at the beginning it was really hard. Blending families together is really difficult,” she explained. “There were a lot of frustrations and hurt feelings on both sides of it. We all came out of [it] scarred. I never had any intention to alienate Robyn and her kids.”

Ultimately, Robyn couldn’t help but cry over how broken the family has become in recent years. “It makes me angry. I just don’t know why they’re not figuring this stuff out and talking. Finding their compromise and finding the things that they love about each other,” she added. “I can’t fix it for them. I can try and persuade. I can beg. It’s my family.”

Where Christine Now Stands With Kody

Robyn weighed in on Christine and Kody’s marital issues, after previously going through her own divorce ahead of her marriage to Kody in 2014.

“I was still trying when I was where she’s at. I love Christine and I have always wanted her and Kody’s relationship to be strong,” she admitted. “I understand that, you know, she's feeling like she doesn't have other choices but I wish that she had decided to keep trying.”

Robyn revealed while Christine says she and Kody are divorced, it’s not that simple in their religion, explaining, “Technically, in my head, they're not because their marriage was done by our church officials and they haven't granted them a divorce, but I don't know."

Christine clarified to Krishnan, "In our church, polygamous women can leave. They are not trapped. I haven't been a member of that church for a long time, I left a long time ago. I don't really care. I think that God's fine if I just want to be happy."

Kody confirmed that Christine “doesn’t believe” in their religious institution anymore, so he has chosen to leave it in the hands of God moving forward. “God has a way of sorting things out. Right now, it's in God's hands and I'm not worried about it,” he shared. “God sorts those things out. She doesn’t believe in the religion. She’s not part of the faith anymore.”
