Never enough vampires. More than seven years after the Vampire Academy movie hit theaters, the dhampirs of St. Vladimir’s are headed back to screens.
In May 2021, Variety confirmed that a new TV show based on Richelle Mead‘s series of young-adult novels is headed to Peacock. Julie Plec, known for her work on The Vampire Diaries and its two spinoffs, will cowrite the series and share showrunning duties with Marguerite MacIntyre.
In August 2021, Plec revealed that adapting the Vampire Academy novels had long been a dream of hers. “I read them before Twilight,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “I read them before Vampire Diaries came into my world and just really enjoyed the series and always thought, ‘Gosh, one day I’d really love to work on a show like this.'”
When the Legacies creator first read the novels, though, there were few TV shows based on complex book series, especially in the YA genre. By the time they did become popular, Plec already had three vampire shows under her belt and she wasn’t sure she wanted to do another. Eventually, as she told EW, she “realized that the appetite doesn’t really go away.”
Vampire Academy follows the friendship of two teen vampires: Rose Hathaway, a half-human hybrid vampire called a dhampir, and Lissa Dragomir, a royal Moroi vampire. The series will take place at St. Vladimir’s Academy, a boarding school that doubles as a training facility where dhampirs train to protect royal vampires from the more savage Strigoi vampires.
It’s complicated, but if anyone can make it make sense it’s Plec, who has described the new series as “modern-day Bridgerton with vampires.”
Mead, who is also the author of the popular Glittering Court series, tweeted that she was “thrilled” Plec was adapting Vampire Academy after news of the show broke in May.
“I’m thrilled that they’re longtime fans of the books, & I’m just as excited as you guys to hear more about how things are developing!” she added.
André Dae Kim, who will play Moroi vampire Christian Ozera, expressed his excitement after the show’s main cast was announced in August 2021. “Just want to say! I am overwhelmed by the amount of love and support from the #VampireAcademy Family,” he tweeted at the time. “I’m so honored to be working among and with legends on this project. #VAFam so much love. You guys rock.”
