Chipotle Is Giving Away Up to $1 Million of Free Burritos: Here’s How You Can Get in on the Action

Chipotle is celebrating sports the only way it knows how: with free burritos. The chain announced on Tuesday, May 28, that it is dishing out up to one million dollars of free burritos through the rest of the professional basketball season.

So, how exactly do you get in on the action? Per the rules of this contest, the key here is the word “free.” That is to say, every time an on-air announcer says the word “free” during the official coverage of the men’s professional basketball championship series, Chipotle will be “freeting”: live Tweeting a unique code good for the chance to score a free burrito from @chipotletweets.

Each mention of “free” in the first half of each game results in up to 500 free burritos. Each mention of that same word in the second half results in up to 1000 free burritos. Mentions must be from the principal play-by-play announcer, color commentator, or sideline reporter on the official broadcast television network of the games.

However, viewers and tweeters who want to enjoy Chipotle’s freebies will need to be on the offense and act quickly upon hearing the magic word. That’s because the code will only be valid to the first 500 (in the first half) or 1,000 (in the second half) mobile users to text the correct code to 888-222.

The promotion, which is only open to residents of the United States, kicks of on Thursday, May 30. It will be limited to the first 20 on-air mentions of “free” during each game. The deal is slated to conclude on June 9, but will extend later, should the series continue beyond that day. The California-based chain will also be offering free delivery through the series.

“We know that basketball fans are some of the most passionate fans in sports, so we’re putting even more, about one million dollars more, on the line by ‘freeting’ through these final games,” said Chipotle chief marketing officer Chris Brandt in a statement. “Chipotle has never been easier to access and with Chipotle delivery, you never have to choose between basketball and burritos again.”
