Awkward alert! When Chip and Joanna Gaines crossed paths with Martha Stewart on Tuesday, April 23, at the Time 100 Gala in New York City, the lifestyle guru apparently had no idea who the Fixer Upper duo are, or at least didn’t recognize them.
The popular home-improvement couple, who was honored as part of Time’s 100 Most Powerful People in the World, asked actress Sophia Bush to introduce them to Stewart, 77, but the meet-and-greet didn’t exactly go as planned. “We were so excited to meet Martha Stewart, but she didn’t have the faintest idea who we are, not a single clue,” Chip, 44, told Page Six.
Still, Chip insists he and Joanna, 41, weren’t bothered by the slight. “We don’t mind at all, Joanna was so excited to meet Martha and so we asked someone to introduce us,” he continued, noting that the Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia founder was “very gracious and supportive.”
“It was really wonderful moment for us to meet her,” the Magnolia cofounder said.
However, it seems Chip may have gotten the wrong idea after his encounter with Stewart. When Page Six caught up with the Clean Slate author, she insisted that she did, in fact, know of the famous pair, but didn’t immediately recognize them when they approached her at the Time event.
“I had never met Chip and Joanna at all before, but their Magnolia magazine is published by my publisher Meredith, and I know they have a lovely family and a TV station,” the Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party cohost explained.
Speaking of that TV station, which is slated to replace Discovery’s DIY Network in 2020, Joanna revealed the 24-hour network will not be all about the Gaines clan – which also includes the couple’s kids, Drake, 14, Duke and Ella, both 13, Emmie, 9, and Crew 10 months – and will also feature shows about lifestyle, cooking, design and kids. “We are looking for the right talent and the right programming,” she dished.
