Nothing quite says “new year, new you” like embarking on a new fitness regimen. Whatever our reasons for hitting the gym —mental health, stress relief, weight loss, getting stronger, or just the desire to be a little more healthy in the new year — we’re excited that come 2019, we’re making even more of a commitment to getting our sweat on.

Unfortunately, our favorite thing about working out is also our least favorite — commitment. Most gyms require contracts for at least a year. Beyond that, there are always hidden initiation fees, sometimes costing hundreds of dollars. Ever tried to cancel a gym membership before the year is up? Honestly, we’ve seen less messy divorces.

Also, let’s face it: Gyms aren’t exactly the most fun places in the world, either. Sure, many have group fitness classes or offer the expertise of personal trainers, but those often come at an added cost on top of your already pricey membership. Who has the time or budget for that?

As determined as we are to try to prioritize breaking a sweat in the new year, we want to avoid having to deal with all the hoopla that goes into a membership. Plus, we like to switch things up and not be bound to the same place for an entire year. Enter: ClassPass.

If you haven’t yet heard about ClassPass or your fitness-loving friends been too busy preparing for marathons, listen up!

ClassPass is like having that super fit, in-the-know friend on speed dial at all times. The app and website partner with thousands of fitness studios and make signing up for class a total cinch. Instead of cross-checking schedules and availabilities, our next class is just one quick click away.

What makes studio and group workouts better than just going to your local gym? Easy: A studio class is, for the most part, specific to one activity or body part. Studios also attract the best instructors in their field. We’re also motivated by the energy of the other members of our class, while still getting the individual attention only a highly-specialized trainer can provide.

ClassPass also takes the ho-hum out of a basic workout. Instead of logging hours at a treadmill and wanting to fall asleep from boredom, we can take a running class one day and a spin class the next and even a rock climbing class the following day.

That brings Us to our next favorite point about ClassPass: We can always switch up our workouts! No more getting stuck doing the same thing day in and day out! While we can theoretically spend our entire cycle’s worth of credits (more on that in a bit) on just one activity we love, that’s no fun! We love to vary our workouts to focus on different muscle groups and ensure our sweat session never gets too predictable. Plus, if we don’t like a certain kind of workout, we never have to do it again! ClassPass ensures we’re not bound to any studio and are never roped into class packs (though if we really fall in love with a studio, that’s totally an option).

ClassPass is available in more than 80 cities throughout the country, including New York City, Austin, Chicago, Miami and Los Angeles. It’s even available internationally. Bit by the travel bug? Not to worry — we can just add a flex location and use our credits wherever we are.

As for the types of studios we can discover on ClassPass, there really is no limit. From yoga and barre to dance, boxing and cycling, there’s bound to be something out there no matter what we or our loved ones are into. There are even more fine-tuned options, including prenatal, wellness classes and even outdoor activities. We can even use our credits to go to one of the partner ClassPass gyms. It’s not just indie places on the roster, either — studios with multiple locations, like Flywheel and Pure Barre, are part of the program.

Into it? We are! How does it actually work, though? Let us explain: Instead of paying for packs of classes or individual workouts, we pay for credits. For example, members based in New York would pay $49 for 27 credits, which would allow them to book up to 4 classes. Prices vary based on location, though different pricing plans are available pending the number of credits we think we can use. If we didn’t use all of them, that’s fine — up 10 credits will roll over into our next month.

The best way to make sure a loved one enjoys ClassPass is to just get them a gift card! Instead of trying to guess how many credits they’ll use and making a membership in their name, a gift card will make it easy for them to sign up for one (or more!) of the one million workout classes offered. Seriously: It’s the best gift we can give that doesn’t require gift wrap.
