How many minutes a day do we spend on our phones? Let us rephrase that question. How many hours do we spend on our phones? Our smartphones actually measure how much time we spend in front of our screens, and what it can tell us may come as a shock.

As a society, we are so wrapped up and consumed by all things digital. Everything from our forms of communication, self-image, social media and even livelihood is so dependent on technology that without it, we’re at a loss of how to grasp. Put The Damn Phone Down: Disconnect to Connect by Alyssa Lynn Malmquist is the insightful story that looks to challenge Us all to literally put the damn phone down.

With technology at the forefront of most problems, this book looks to remove all of those smart devices from our hands and in order to see things a bit clearer. The ultimate goal? To utilize means of communication long before texting, Instagram Stories, Snapchat and FaceTime.

The book attempts to understand everything from basic social human interactions to how to communicate without smartphones telling Us what to say or how to think. It takes a step back and looks to reintroduce the basic innate communication skills that were so consistent and apparent before technology took over.

This revolutionary and cautionary tale doesn’t just sound captivating. It is captivating. The readers who experienced the magic of putting their phone downs first-hand after reading this book were changed for the better, according to reviews! One reviewer called this story an absolute must-read, as it was absolutely alarming to find how co-dependent they were of their phone in daily life. Another reviewer pointed out just how eye-opening this book was when realizing how time was passing them by. This reader felt as if their relationships weren’t as real as they thought and most of them lacked meaning outside of their mobile device.

Truthfully, it sounds far too familiar. In a world that is primarily based on Instagram likes, we’ve often lost the value of a person face-to-face. In fact, this is the book’s main goal: To explore all of those superficial relationships and experiences we have day in and day out and have us starting to ask the big questions back. How can we start to make people matter? Can we measure our friendship with someone by how many photos they like? Or how many selfies they’ve taken with Us? How do we hit the restart and find more meaning?

When looking to do some real-life soul-searching and explore what truly matters, we highly recommend putting the phone (and all other electronic devices) down and picking up this book instead. After all when was the last time we turned a page instead of scrolling through a homepage?
