If there’s ever a time to be proud of having a one-track mind, it’s when we’re shopping. When we know exactly what we want — be it a great cashmere scarf, a figure-sculpting pair of jeans or a leather jacket that makes us swoon — we embark on a mission to add it to our closet as fast as possible. This helps us avoid overstuffing our virtual carts with things we don’t need, or buying items that only kind of work but aren’t quite what we were initially looking for. Sure, we love to browse too, but when we’re after a very specific piece, we don’t allow anything to stand in our way.
One item we spent ages trying to hunt down is a jaw-dropping red coat. Annoyingly enough, this has proven to be surprisingly difficult: Every coat we came across is either the wrong length, has too much detailing so it won’t be versatile enough to wear every day or is just so out of our usual price range that we can’t add it to our carts while still maintaining a clear conscience (and still be able to to get presents for everyone on our list come the holidays). There’s also the part about nailing the perfect shade of red: Either it’s so bright that it looks like we stole it from Ronald McDonald’s closet, or it’s just such a one-dimensional red that we feel childish in it. The perfect red coat should be the optimal shade of crimson: Not too vivid, yet still bright enough to turn heads. It should look classic, not like we’re taking fashion inspiration from Santa Claus — is that so hard to find?
Luckily for our coat closets, we found just the one we’ve been searching for. The London Fog Double-Breasted Plaid-Scarf Peacoat is truly the most perfect red coat: It’s in a glorious shade of scarlet and comes complete with tortoiseshell-hued buttons with double-breasted closure. There’s a chic wing collar and slit pockets at the hips to stow your hands for extra warmth or just to keep our phone and keys should we choose to forego a bag. It’s fully lined, so you’ll be kept warm during the most blustery winter days. It’s a little more cropped than we normally go for: It’s hemmed just below the hip, making it long enough to cover the rear but not so long that it’s grazing our mid-thigh.
The absolute best part about the chic coat isn’t the beautiful red shade (though we love it more than words): It’s the little something extra that goes along with it. The London Fog coat comes with a scarf in a complementing plaid pattern. That particular coat comes with a scarf featuring different shades of grey as well as a classic red to play up the same color in the coat. Better yet, the scarf is totally detachable, so we can choose to wear it with other coats and sweaters or team the coat with a lighter or thicker scarf, depending on just how cold it is outside.
Not as big a fan of red coats as we are? We get it! It can be intimidating to work something so attention-grabbing into your closet. The London Fog peacoat also comes in a variety of neutral shades. There’s a classic black, which comes with the same grey and red scarf we’d get if we were to opt for the red option after all. Want something a touch more muted? A stunning charcoal grey shade is also available with a scarf in the same colorway, plus a deep navy that comes with an inky black scarf. Dig prints? Try the black and white option, which also comes with a black scarf. Finally, a taupe heather option is available for fashionistas that prefer lighter colors. It even comes with a matching dove grey and beige plaid scarf.
Don’t let us be the only ones singing the coat praises! Reviewers love the coat just as much as we do, with hundreds even deigning so far as to rate the style five stars at Macy’s! Multiple shoppers insist that the coat looks absolutely stunning on, while others say that it’s a decidedly classy option for winter. Shoppers agree that it’s not too bulky or uncomfortably heavy. Some even loved it so much that they bought exact ones for family members and friends (which, if you ask Us, is the best way to show someone how much you love them).
