Former NFL star LeSean McCoy took a bold stance about the arrest of former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.
McCoy, 38, criticized the female officer who arrested Romo, 46, after body cam of the incident was released on Tuesday, July 28.
“She had something against Tony right there,” McCoy said Tuesday on Speakeasy, joking that the cop might have “placed some bets” on Romo during his playing career.
McCoy added, “On a serious note, though, sometimes I think — and I’m not saying law enforcement — but sometimes we’re overdoing our job. Because he don’t even seem drunk. I know some drunk cats.”
Romo was arrested on Thursday, July 23, on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence. He was pulled over in Milwaukee around 8 p.m. and failed multiple field sobriety tests before being taken into custody.
The CBS Sports analyst refused to take a “test for intoxication” after his arrest, according to court records viewed by Us.
“I’m giving him a pass, god dangit!” McCoy said of Romo, which earned the ire of his Speakeasy cohost Emmanuel Acho.
Acho, 35, responded, “If you’re driving while under the influence, I will never give you a pass. Ever. … I think it’s the empathy in me. I can’t give a pass to anyone who drives a vehicle while under the influence. He failed the sobriety test. Maybe it’s because he has a bad back, maybe it’s because he’s unathletic.”
In the body cam footage, Romo tells police officers that he’s struggling to complete the field sobriety tests because he has a bad back from his football days.
Speakeasy cohost Kieran Hickey-Semple also took Romo’s side, doubling down on criticism of the female cop.
“Watching this clip, most of her suspicion comes from him not being able to hear,” Hickey-Semple argued. “Meanwhile he tells her multiple times, ‘Hey, I’m sorry. I can’t hear you.’ We’re on the side of the damn highway. There’s cars rushing by. It’s hard to hear. She increases the level of her voice a couple of times and then just goes right back to the same level of talking that he was before when he keeps asking questions.”
He continued, “I think that’s what raises her suspicion about all of it. To me, it’s tough.”
Acho pushed back, questioning why Romo would refuse the breathalyzer test if he hadn’t “been drinking.”
