Surprising new details have emerged surrounding the arrest of former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.
Romo, 46, has been issued a citation for “refusing to take test for intoxication after arrest,” according to court records viewed by Us.
Us has reached out to Romo’s attorney for comment.
The former NFL star was arrested on Thursday, July 23, on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence.
Romo was pulled over in Milwaukee around 8 p.m. after playing in the 2026 Wisconsin Amateur Championship golf tournament.
He allegedly failed field sobriety tests after being pulled over and was taken into custody. A court date has been set for September 21.
The CBS Sports color commentator, who grew up in Burlington, Wisconsin, has become an avid golfer in his post-NFL playing days.
The ex quarterback finished in a tie for 73rd place at the tournament at 35-over. His worst score of the week, 82, came on the day of his arrest.
Romo has become a frequent entrant at tournaments like the Wisconsin Amateur Championship.
He’s also a three-time winner of the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament, held annually in South Lake Tahoe. At this year’s tournament, held earlier this month, Us exclusively took video of Romo walking the course with his brother-in-law, actor Chace Crawford.
Romo and his wife, Candice Crawford, have been married since May 2011, and the couple share three sons: Hawkins, 14, Rivers, 12, and Jones, 8.
After suffering a wrist injury in 2020, Romo was forced to take roughly a year-and-a-half off from golf.
He told reporters at the American Century Championship on July 9 that he had finally started to regain some of his former confidence.
“I feel like this winter I kind of turned the corner where I feel comfortable enough where I can step up and hit and don’t have to take 20 practice swings and slow the group down forever,” he explained. “It feels more comfortable than it has in a long time.”
He added, “What you take away is you probably need to practice that more than you think. And I think that’s one of the things that I feel like I’ve put a lot of time into coming here.”
Since retiring from the NFL in 2016 after 13 seasons with the Cowboys, Romo has worked alongside announcer Jim Nantz on CBS Sports’ No. 1 NFL broadcast crew.
CBS Sports has not responded to Us’ inquiries about his future at the network following his arrest.
