Ex NHL Star Sean Avery Breaks His Silence About Bizarre Shooting at His Home Involving ‘2 Hookers’

Former NHL star Sean Avery addressed a shooting at his Los Angeles home on Tuesday, June 2, which came with some surprisingly sordid details.

“My crazy neighbor shot out the tires of the contractor building a new deck at the house,” Avery, 46, said in a video posted via his Instagram Story on Tuesday.  “As this is going on, there’s a standoff at the house. He’s inside. He’s got guns. He calls two hookers and tries to frame me.”

Avery continued with a laugh, “He sends two hookers up to the house for me — I’m not even there — as a smokescreen.”

TMZ broke the news of the shooting at Avery’s home, which he shares with his wife, Hilary Rhoda, and their 5-year-old son, Nash. The outlet reported that Rhoda, 39, was not home at the time of the incident, but did not mention Nash.

Police reportedly responded to a call at Avery’s home over “criminal threats” around 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

The caller explained that the suspect was Avery’s neighbor who had a history of harassment toward the home’s contractors. At the time, police indicated no indication of any threat and no report was taken.

Shortly before 5 p.m. on Tuesday, police were called again after shots rang out. Avery’s neighbor was then reportedly taken into custody.

Avery — who played 12 seasons in the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, New York Rangers and Dallas Stars — reconciled with Rhoda in August 2025 after she had previously filed a restraining order against him.

In court documents obtained by TMZ at the time, Avery requested the restraining order — which was filed in October 2022 — be terminated because “mom and dad have reconciled.”

“Hilary and Sean have been living together for over a year,” the filing said.

According to documents obtained by Us Weekly, the restraining order stipulated that Avery was legally required to stay 100 yards away from Rhoda, her workplace and their son’s school, with the exception of “briefly and peacefully exchang[ing] children for court-ordered visits,” during which Avery was permitted to communicate with Rhoda in a “brief and peaceful” manner.

The restraining order was extended in July 2023, which also gave Rhoda full and legal custody of Nash.

Rhoda filed for divorce from Avery in July 2022, citing “irreconcilable differences,” though the divorce was never legally finalized.

In January of this year, Avery shared a photo via Instagram from an ice skating trip with Nash, calling him “the future.”
