Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo had an open bottle of alcohol in his vehicle when he was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence in Wisconsin, according to police.
An “open bottle of an alcoholic beverage” was found on the passenger’s side of Romo’s Jeep on July 23, according to one of three citations released by the Milwaukee Sheriff’s Office and obtained by the Associated Press.
The bottle was discovered when the vehicle was searched before being towed. The citation does not explicitly state what kind of alcohol was found.
A separate citation said Romo, 46, was stopped by police in Milwaukee after he was seen passing vehicles in a “gore area,” which separates interstate traffic from cars entering from an on-ramp. Police noted that Romo asked what a gore area was after being pulled over.
The CBS Sports analyst failed multiple field sobriety tests, as seen in newly released body cam footage, with an officer telling Romo she thought he was intoxicated because of his “red glassy eyes” and an “odor of an intoxicating alcoholic beverage.”
Romo was also issued a citation for “refusing to take test for intoxication after arrest,” according to court records viewed by Us.
A court date has been set for September 21. Us has reached out to Romo’s attorney for comment.
Romo, who grew up in Burlington, Wisconsin, was arrested on July 23 on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence shortly after playing in the 2026 Wisconsin Amateur Championship golf tournament.
Romo and his wife, Candice Crawford, have been married since May 2011, and the couple share three sons: Hawkins, 14, Rivers, 12, and Jones, 8.

Earlier this year, Romo responded to critics of his often enthusiastic broadcast style.
“I think it goes with the territory,” Romo said on ESPN’s The Pat McAfee Show in January. “People are like, ‘What about the criticism?’”
He continued, “You’re doing you, and you’ve got to be yourself and everything. You’re trying your best, and it’s not like you’re ever not trying your best to be great at something. But then you look at it and it’s like … the noise is the noise. It’s part of being in this job. To me, it’s like, it’s up, it’s down. But at the end of the day, you don’t really listen to things.”
