Amy Robach is fighting back. The 40-year-old ABC News journalist appeared on Good Morning America Wednesday, Jan. 15 with a new short haircut. As she undergoes chemotherapy during her battle with breast cancer, Robach made the decision to cut her long hair short after she started to see it fall out.
"We know in our line of work that appearance is important — and it's important to anybody and everybody, really — and I decided I was going to take control of one thing away from the cancer, so I got my hair cut," Robach explained on GMA.
The veteran journalist was diagnosed with breast cancer last October, and has since undergone a double mastectomy and two of eight total planned rounds of chemo.
"Today I'm taking control of something that I have very little control of," Robach explained in a personal video before her salon appointment. "I'm going to cut my hair very short. I've never done this before, but I want to say that I had something to do with how I like, not the cancer."
In the video, Robach gets a little emotional as she watches a stylist cut her long hair. "I knew I'd cry at least once," she said, wiping away tears. "It's like a fresh start, a new chapter."
"You know how fantastic you look, right?" George Stephanopoulos told Robach on GMA Wednesday.
"Thank you," she said. "I feel free. I feel empowered."
