George Stephanopoulos

George Stephanopoulos is a journalist, television anchor and former political adviser best known for cohosting ABC’s Good Morning America and anchoring This Week With George Stephanopoulos. Before becoming a prominent figure in broadcast journalism, he served as a senior adviser to President Bill Clinton and played a key role in Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign. Stephanopoulos grew up in Cleveland in a Greek-American family. He graduated from Columbia University in 1982 with a degree in political science, earning summa cum laude honors. He later attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar and earned a master’s degree in theology in 1984.

Stephanopoulos began his political career as an aide to Ohio Congressman Ed Feighan before working for House Majority Leader Dick Gephardt. He joined Clinton’s presidential campaign in 1991 and later served as White House communications director and senior adviser for policy and strategy. He left the administration in 1996 and joined ABC News in 1997 as a political analyst.

In 2002, Stephanopoulos became the host of This Week, and he joined Good Morning America as a coanchor in 2009. Throughout his career, he has been awarded four Emmy Awards and authored the books All Too Human: A Political Education (1999) and The Situation Room: The Inside Story of Presidents in Crisis (2024).

Stephanopoulos married actress, comedian and author Ali Wentworth in 2001. The couple shares two daughters, Elliott (born in 2002) and Harper (born in 2005).
