While Team USA’s uniforms are all about the red, white and blue, their off-duty style hits all the colors of the rainbow — with a few designer touches too.
“I make it a goal, once a week, to not wear athletic clothes,” Olympic diving hopeful Steele Johnson says in a new video about Team USA athletes’ personal style.
While some Olympians, like volleyball player Kerri Walsh Jennings, prefer to be casual — “Jeans and a tank top is where I like to live if I’m not in a bikini,” she says — others relish the chance to dress up.
“I enjoy when I get a chance to kind of dress nice and look good and get out of the sweats for a little bit,” 23-year-old BMX rider Connor Fields says, proudly showing off a suit his dad got him for his 21st birthday. “As I get older, I realize that it’s important to present yourself in a good way.”
Aly Raisman showed off her jewelry in the video, including some Olympic-inspired bling. “I have these rings. They’re actually gold, silver and bronze, so I like them.”
But dressing up an Olympic body isn’t always easy.
“I think it’s a challenge for a lot of athletes to find clothes,” shot-putter Michelle Carter says. “Especially a thrower! I have these massive thighs and shoulders and arms!”
Open-water swimmer Haley Anderson has a similar problem, with her strong shoulders. “Nothing tight, nothing restraining!” she says.
But it’s all about embracing the strength in your champion body.
“I go for, like, tighter clothes, I guess,” gymnast Simone Biles explains. “You get over the fact that your muscles are bigger than any of the guys.”
