It was a busy end of summer for Prince William and Princess Kate. In late August, the royal couple returned home to Forest Lodge after their annual family trip to Balmoral Castle in Scotland with their children, Prince George, 13, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8. Then it was time to gear up for back-to-school season, which included dropping their oldest off at Eton College. Amid the hustle and bustle, William’s estranged brother, Prince Harry, made an unexpected move back to England from the U.S. with his wife, Meghan Markle, and their two kids, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5.

For the first time in more than six years, William and Harry are living in the same country. “It was a shock to William and Kate,” says a source about Harry’s return. “They’re still processing it, but their initial surprise has evolved, and they’re taking a wait-and-see approach.” Sources tell Us that Harry, 41, and Meghan, 45, are residing in the Cotswolds and that Archie and Lilibet attend a private school nearby. William and Kate, both 44, are now navigating what it means to have Harry in close proximity again — for their relationship and the monarchy at large. “William will be watching his brother very closely,” says former royal butler Grant Harrold, “and trying to work out what his game plan is.”

Currently, there are no plans for a sibling reunion. “No one’s booking a table for two for William and Harry,” says the source. “Everyone wants a reunion story, but it’s not something that’s in the cards.” The source says William doesn’t look at Harry’s comeback as an olive branch: “If fences do get mended, it will be a slow and private process, and on William’s terms.”

William is put off by how quickly Harry and Meghan relocated and “the assumption” that Harry’s homecoming “resets everything,” says the source. The brothers haven’t been on speaking terms in years; they last saw each other at the funeral of their uncle Lord Robert Fellowes in August 2024. (According to the source, William and Kate were “blindsided” by Harry and Meghan’s move; they were informed via King Charles III’s private secretary on Aug. 17, the day after the monarch was told.) “I believe William is still furious [with Harry],” says Harrold. “I don’t believe he’s happy Harry is back in the U.K. at all.” Adds the source: “The relationship was already broken, [and while] the move doesn’t break it again, it does put the break in the same country.”

FROM LEFT: VITO AMATI/GETTY; CHRIS JACKSON/GETTY

Harry and Meghan had clearly been planning the move for some time before leaving Montecito, California, in late August. “It takes a long time for children to be enrolled in new private schools,” says royal expert Robert Jobson. “Even if you’re Mick Jagger, you can’t just ring up and say, ‘Get my kid in that school tomorrow.’” The pair may have finalized the details during their July trip to meet with Charles, 77, and Queen Camilla, 79. “That was probably when they looked at places to stay,” says royal historian Marlene Koenig. The source says Charles was unaware at the time that Harry planned to move back, and that while he’s “pleased” and “hopes for closer ties to his son,” he also “remains cautious about managing expectations.” (On Sept. 7, Buckingham Palace released a letter on behalf of Charles that made clear Harry and Meghan remain non-working members of the royal family.)

For William, Harry’s decision to establish a life in the U.S. in 2020 offered the feuding brothers some much-needed space. (William and Kate have yet to publicly acknowledged Harry and Meghan’s return.) Now, there will be ample opportunities for the two families to cross paths. “Their lives will inevitably exist in closer orbit again,” explains British broadcast journalist Sharon Carpenter. “Living thousands of miles apart made it easier for William and Harry to lead separate lives. Harry being back in England removes some of that distance, literally and figuratively.”

Inside the Royal Family's Deepening Divide Ahead of Prince Harry's Return

Family gatherings and events will undoubtedly “create opportunities for contact,” adds Carpenter, who thinks Harry and William could make headway organically. “I don’t think reconciliation necessarily begins with some dramatic summit. William and Harry grew up together; they share decades of memories and a very particular sense of humor. The first breakthrough may simply come from getting comfortable around each other again.”

Royal expert Amanda Matta notes that the public may even see Harry and Meghan take part in the family’s annual Christmas walk at Sandringham. “If they are considered an active part of the family, they could very well be at Christmas,” she says. (In July, after Harry and Charles’ meeting, a source told Us that the idea of spending the holiday together had been “floated as a possibility.”)

Darren Fletcher – WPA Pool/Getty Images

The kids could also prove to be a uniting force. “As the five children get older, there may be a natural desire not to allow an estrangement between two brothers to become an estrangement between cousins,” says Carpenter. “Harry and William can keep their distance if that’s what they want, but you now have the king, the extended family, major family occasions and the next generation all in the same country.” The source tells Us, however, that there are no plans for the kids to meet. “They are leaving the kids out of it.”

Before Harry and Meghan’s surprising move, Kate had only recently regained her footing following her cancer battle. “Kate not only embraces the responsibility of her role, she is very protective of it,” says a second source, noting that the relationship between Kate and Meghan “has not improved.” Says the first source: “Kate is thinking about her kids and her work and not thinking about being ambushed by the Sussexes. She wants William and Harry [to reconcile], but she supports William 100 percent.”

Prince Harry Was 'Not as Happy' Living in the U.S. After Royal Exit

Though few saw Harry and Meghan’s move coming, Meghan has been said to be in talks to join season 3 of Netflix’s The Gentlemen, which films in England. “She’s expressed that she wants to return to acting and is excited about upcoming opportunities,” a third source tells Us. (When asked about the casting rumors, star Theo James joked that Harry would be playing one of his love interests.) Harry, meanwhile, wants to become more involved with his U.K. charities. (The next Invictus Games will take place in Birmingham in July 2027.) “There doesn’t appear to be any intention to go back to full-time working royal status,” says the first source.

The move may ultimately be temporary. Harry and Meghan will keep their $14.6 million Montecito house, as well as a vacation home in Portugal. “I’ve heard it’s kind of a trial run,” says Matta. “They like the idea of having the best of both worlds,” says the third source, noting that the Sussexes want their kids to have “a stronger connection to the U.K. as they get older.”

Toby Melville-WPA Pool/Getty Images

Jobson says Harry may want to spend as much time as he can with his father, who revealed his cancer diagnosis in 2024. (Charles said in late 2025 that he was responding well to treatment.) “Or maybe he’s concerned about his financial position,” Jobson adds. (In July, Harry lost his $67 million privacy suit against the publisher of the U.K.’s Daily Mail over allegations of unlawfully obtained information; he and six other claimants were ordered to pay $13 million in legal fees to the publisher.) “Their brand isn’t really successful unless they’re closely linked to the royal family, and [maybe] this is their way of doing that.”

Harry and Meghan were open about how miserable they were during their time in the U.K. In a 2019 interview, Meghan said she unsuccessfully “tried to adopt this British sensibility of a ‘stiff upper lip,’” but found it “really damaging” to her mental health. She and Harry also spoke about the invasive nature of British paparazzi. Carpenter notes that security also remains a major challenge: “Harry has still not been granted the level of state-funded police protection he has been seeking.” Another point of contention for the couple, says Matta, could be giving the monarchy access to their schedules.

If there’s any hope of repairing the damage, it will require consistency on Harry’s part. “William is the future king,” says Carpenter. “Anything involving Harry has a personal and an institutional dimension for him. Rebuilding trust will have to come before rebuilding closeness.” The mood in the U.K. is divided. “The [British] public is skeptical, especially about Meghan, but Harry was always a beloved member of the royal family,” says the first source, “so there’s a big contingent who welcome him back with open arms.”

All eyes are on Harry. “[There can be] no negative interviews, no slagging off the royals, no controversial business deals,” says Harrold. “If Harry proves himself and William feels the situation is safer, things may start to change. But it will all depend on the decisions and choices Harry makes in the coming months.”

George, 13, completed his sharp ensemble with polished black dress shoes.

He gave a megawatt smile to the camera and donned a neatly groomed hairstyle with a side part. George posed for photos alongside a wall, and also with his hands clasped in front of him.

Matt Porteous / Kensington Palace

George was joined by his proud parents to be dropped off for his first day of school in Berkshire, England, on Tuesday, September 8. (In addition to George, William and Kate, both 44, share Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8.)

On Tuesday, George arrived in a black suit with a blue dress shirt and tie before changing into his school uniform.

George is following in his father’s footsteps, as William attended Eton College from 1995 to 2000 while his younger brother, Prince Harry, studied there from 1998 to 2003.

A source exclusively told Us in 2021 that William and Kate were “open to sending George to boarding school in the future and have already checked out a few, but they feel 8 is a little young and want to wait until he’s slightly older.”

“George going to school is a decision the Cambridges will make as a family,” the insider added. “They’d never force George to go unless he wants to and they feel it’s right.”

At the time, George was open to the idea after hearing his parents’ stories about boarding school, which he thought sounded “super fun.”

George is currently second in line to the British throne. The young royal is well “aware” that he’ll be the king of the U.K. one day, another source told Us in 2020.

Prince William and Princess Kate Middleton marked a major milestone with their son Prince George as he started the school year at Eton College.

The royal couple were seen dropping off their 13-year-old for his first day at the all-boys school in Windsor, England, on Tuesday, September 8. William, 44, dressed smartly for the occasion, wearing a dark suit and blue tie. George was the spitting image of his father as the trio strolled through the courtyard.

Kate, for her part, looked dazzling in an emerald green dress and beamed with pride on her son’s big day.

Simon Henderson, the school’s headmaster, and provost Sir Nicholas Coleridge were on hand to greet George and his parents.

Henderson reportedly welcomed the new student and told him, “Good luck. Enjoy it.”

William previously attended the boarding school from 1995 to 2000. In a scene mirroring the one captured by photographers on Tuesday, William was dropped off by his father, King Charles III, and late mother Princess Diana on his first day.

William and Kate, 44, have been hands-on parents while raising George and his siblings: Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8.

“They’d never force George to go unless he wants to and they feel it’s right,” the insider told Us in 2021, adding that the decision would be one they made “as a family.”

According to a separate source, William was already preparing George for his future as a royal leader.

“William’s already explained his future role to him, and he loves learning about his family in history classes,” the insider explained. “William tries not to overwhelm him with too much information, but George is aware that there’s a lot more to being king than how the role is portrayed in Disney movies and children’s books.”

More recently, royal historian Marlene Koenig told Us that George is “undoubtedly aware” of what lies ahead for him as second in line to the throne behind his father.

Reflecting on George’s role as a train bearer in grandfather Charles’ coronation in 2023, Koenig added, “The coronation provided the young prince with the knowledge that he, too, would one day be crowned in a coronation ceremony.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were caught off guard by the timing of a letter sent by King Charles III regarding their status as working members of the royal family.

News broke on Monday, September 7, that a letter written by senior officer of the royal household Lord Chamberlain on Charles’ behalf was sent to Harry’s team, clarifying his and Meghan’s roles amid their return to the U.K.

A spokesperson for the Sussexes told the BBC that the pair were “a little surprised not to have been told about this in advance.”

According to the outlet, the couple’s team are believed to have only seen the letter about an hour before it made headlines. By the time they were able to reach Harry, 41, the letter was reportedly almost published.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Arrive Back in U.K. Amid Move: Report

The letter described Harry and Meghan, 45, as being “akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests,” noting that their charitable work “is a personal matter for them both.”

“It is well known that in January 2020 the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of The Sovereign, and are no longer working Members of The Royal Family,” the letter continued. “This position, distinct from the State and Royal duties undertaken by the working Royal Family, and with the personal latitude it brings the couple in respect of financial independence and protection of their privacy as they would wish, will continue to be fully respected.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Jonathan Brady / POOL / AFP

The letter added that the pair’s “styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used.”

Harry and Meghan stepped away from the royal spotlight in 2020, moving to California, where they raised their two children: Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5.

Will Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's U.K. Move Change Their Royal Roles?

In August, news broke that the couple were planning to move back overseas, with their kids scheduled to begin school in the U.K. Harry and Meghan are expected to keep their home in Montecito, California, as well as a vacation property in Portugal.

Harry’s relationship with his family fractured amid his royal exit, but former royal butler Grant Harrold predicted that Charles, 77, may have played a role in his son’s decision to return home.

“I think behind closed doors Harry and the King have been working hard to heal their relationship,” Harrold exclusively told Us last month. “Only so much can be done when they live so far apart, so I think this is Harry making his dad his priority, which is really nice to see.”

He added, “I think the king will be delighted to have his son and daughter-in-law closer to home. He’s well aware that their rift will never be healed when they’re only seeing each other once a twice a year, this is the next step that’s needed if they want to heal their relationship.”

“The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity,” read the letter written by senior officer of the royal household Lord Chamberlain, obtained by multiple outlets including Newsweek and NBC News. “In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.”

A Buckingham Palace source confirmed to the outlet that the letter was shared with Harry’s team on Monday, September 7.

Harry and Meghan, 45, stepped down as senior royals in 2020 and subsequently left the U.K. and moved to Montecito, California, with son Prince Archie, now 7. The following year, they welcomed daughter Princess Lilibet, 5.

Six years after their shocking move, Harry and Meghan surprised the world again after they decided to return to the U.K. with their children. Archie and Lilibet are scheduled to begin school there this month.

A source told Us that Harry was “not as happy in the U.S. as he is in the U.K” and that he and Meghan are “open to a new chapter.”

Harry and Meghan were not expected to resume royal duties upon their return across the pond. The Duke of Sussex will be spending more time supporting multiple U.K.-based charities and patronages while Meghan is expected to continue running her As Ever brand overseas. Rumors swirled that Meghan was going to return to acting with a potential role in The Gentlemen season 3. However, nothing has been officially announced.

President Donald Trump did not mince words while sharing his reaction to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle leaving the U.S. to resettle in the U.K.

“I’m happy about it,” Trump, 80, told reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday, September 2. “I was not a fan.”

The president added that if he were a member of the British royal family, he would “not have taken them back, frankly.”

“I thought they treated the royal family with great disrespect,” Trump said of the couple. “I didn’t like it. I didn’t like the way she acted. I thought she was terribly disrespectful to the Queen [Elizabeth II] and to King Charles [III].”

Charles, 77, hosted Trump for a state visit in the U.K. in September 2025. Six years prior, the late Elizabeth hosted Trump during his first term as president. He returned the favor by hosting Charles and wife Queen Camilla for a state visit to the U.S. in April.

President Trump Makes Subtle Dig at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Marriage

Harry, 41, and Meghan, 45, left the U.K. and moved to Montecito, California, with son Prince Archie, now 7, after they stepped down as senior royals in 2020. (The couple later welcomed daughter Princess Lilibet, 5, in 2021.) Six years later, they have moved across the pond once again with both of their children, who are starting school in the area this month.

Harry and Meghan are expected to keep their home in Montecito, as well as a vacation residence in Portugal.

A source exclusively told Us ahead of the move in August that Harry was “not as happy in the U.S. as he is in the U.K.”

“They are open to a new chapter,” the source continued.

Jonathan Brady / POOL / AFP

The pair are not expected to resume royal duties, although Harry will be spending more time supporting U.K.-based charities and patronages. Meghan, meanwhile, is expected to continue running her As Ever brand overseas and is reportedly in talks to return to acting.

The insider noted, “Harry still operates as if he were a member of the royal family when he evaluates opportunities. He’s seen royals who have left the royal family, like Sarah Ferguson, whose path he does not want to emulate. He wants to do things that are a right fit for him, but that can be very limiting. And, of course, they need to find ways to make money, so they are eager to find partnerships that are the right fit and fruitful for them.”

Us understands that Charles was informed of his son’s plans to return to the U.K. just days before the news made headlines. Tensions have grown between Harry and his family, including brother Prince William, since his and Meghan’s royal exit.

Former royal butler Grant Harrold told Us that Harry’s move likely will not “completely heal” his relationship with William, 44.

“It will take a lot more than that,” Harrold said last month. “Too much happened. It will be a situation where actions mean more than words. … I think they will be poker-faced and play happy families, but behind the scenes, it will take a lot more.”

It’s been nearly 30 years since Princess Diana’s death, but her memory lives on through her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry; their wives, Princess Kate and Meghan Markle; and even their children, Diana’s five grandchildren.

Harry and William shared memories of their famous mom in the 2017 HBO documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy. “To myself and William, she was just the best mother ever,” Harry said. “She would just engulf you and squeeze you as tight as possible — and being as short as I was then, there was no escape, you were there and you were there for as long as she wanted to hold you.”

“Even talking about it now, I can feel the hugs she used to give us,” he added. “I miss that. I miss that feeling, I miss that part of a family, I miss having that mother to be able to give you those hugs and give you that compassion that I think everybody needs.”

As he and Harry looked at old photos of the Princess of Wales, who died at age 36 in a car accident in Paris on August 31, 1997, William explained that he and Kate talk about Diana with their kids, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

“We’ve got more photos up around the house of her, and we talk about her a bit and stuff,” he said. “It’s important they know who she was and that she existed.”

Prince William and Prince Harry have carried on their late mother Princess Diana’s lasting legacy since her untimely August 31, 1997, death.

William and Harry were 15 and 12, respectively, when the Princess of Wales died at age 36 after sustaining injuries in a car crash in Paris. Since then, the brothers have fondly recalled the time they had with their mother before her death.

The royal family members stewarded the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund and have given back to humanitarian charities in honor of their mother’s life’s work. In 2017, the brothers commissioned a statue to commemorate what would have been the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death. It wasn’t for another four years, however, that the statue was officially unveiled.

Both princes have made it their mission to preserve their mother’s legacy as the next generation of royals prepare to take over the monarchy.
Diana, who married into the royal family when she wed Prince Charles in 1981, was celebrated for her dedication to dozens of charities, most notably ones that aided sick children and people affected by HIV/AIDS, cancer and mental illnesses. In the mid-‘80s, she famously shook hands with a man living with AIDS, publicly challenging the notion that HIV could be passed from person to person through physical contact. She also served as the president of Great Ormond Street Hospital in London from 1989 until her death.

In recent years, the royals have paid tribute to Diana in countless interviews, in addition to commemorating her birthday and the anniversary of her death. Harry has spoken about the regrets he felt in the wake of his mother’s death, while William has shared some of his fondest memories of their time together. The brothers — who were 15 and 12, respectively, when Diana died — did not speak publicly about her passing until they were older.

“There are not many days that go by that I don’t think of her,” the Duke of Cambridge said in the 2017 HBO documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy. The Duke of Sussex, for his part, noted that he has “a lot of grief that still needs to be let out.”

Take a look back at some of the royal family’s most touching tributes to Diana over the years.

Princess Diana left a grand legacy in her wake following her death in 1997.

Diana married into England’s royal family in July 1981, when she and King Charles III (then Prince Charles) exchanged vows. The couple soon welcomed heirs to the throne, with Diana giving birth to Prince William in 1982 and Prince Harry two years later. Charles and Diana famously dealt with their fair share of strife throughout the 15-year marriage — including infidelity — resulting in their December 1992 separation.

Diana and Charles’ divorce was finalized in August 1996 and Diana moved on with Dodi Fayed. The then-Princess of Wales died in August 1997 after a car crash in Paris that occurred while photographers were chasing her. Fayed and the driver of the vehicle, Henri Paul, were also killed. William and Harry were 15 and 12, respectively, at the time of their mother’s death, and they have since kept her legacy alive.

Both princes have named their daughters after their late mom. William and Princess Kate Middleton included “Diana” as one of their daughter Princess Charlotte’s middle names, along with “Elizabeth” in honor of the late Queen Elizabeth II. Harry and wife Meghan Markle’s daughter, Lilibet “Lili” Diana, is also named after her late grandmother and great-grandmother.

The correspondence between the princess and her friends took place during Diana’s divorce from Charles.
“Susie and Tarek Kassem, as very close friends of Diana, Princess of Wales, have treasured these letters for over 25 years,” a statement from Lay’s Auctioneers read. “They have decided to sell the letters and use proceeds of the sale to support some of the charities that were close to Susie and Diana’s hearts.”
The letters give fans insight into Diana’s mindset when she was divorcing Charles, including one dated in August 1996, shortly after the legal proceedings were finalized. She wrote at time: “I am more than happy to have my freedom and reckon that I’m very fortunate to have a second chance.
Diana died at age 36 in August 1997 after being involved in a car crash in Paris. She is survived by her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, whom she shared with King Charles III.

Ahead of the anniversary of his sister’s death, Spencer announced his new book, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, which hits shelves September 22.

Spencer added that the book is for readers of all generations.

“I hope this book will be of interest to the many who still cherish the memory of Diana when she was alive,” he said. “I would be delighted if those too young to remember her in her heyday feel, after reading this, that they ‘get’ who she really was: a one-off, dynamic character, full of love, charisma and self-doubt, who gave life a hell of a go, and left the world a far better place, despite exiting the stage while still so young.”

In the years since Diana’s death, Spencer has been outspoken about her life and legacy. He previously shared insight into the eulogy he delivered at Diana’s highly publicized funeral, which took place in September 1997, revealing that he initially planned a “very different” tribute.

“I had a big, thick address book, and I thought, ‘I want to find someone who’s going to make the speech for her.’ And I got to ‘Z’ and I hadn’t found anyone,” Spencer recalled of the “profoundly emotional moment” during an interview on the “Rosebud” podcast in October 2025.

Spencer remembered getting an “awful feeling” that he would have to be the one to speak at the memorial. At first, he began to write a “very traditional eulogy,” but he soon realized that was “not who [Diana] was.” He wrote the final speech “in an hour and a half.”

Spencer’s memorable eulogy featured a pointed message about William and Harry, who were just 15 and 12 years old, respectively, when they lost their mother.

“She would want us today to pledge ourselves to protecting her beloved boys, William and Harry, from a similar fate and I do this here Diana on your behalf,” he said at the time. “We will not allow them to suffer the anguish that used regularly to drive you to tearful despair.”

“And beyond that,” he continued, “on behalf of your mother and sisters, I pledge that we, your blood family, will do all we can to continue the imaginative way in which you were steering these two exceptional young men so that their souls are not simply immersed by duty and tradition but can sing openly as you planned.”

Ferguson has remained out of the spotlight after ex-husband Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s associations with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein resurfaced.

Ferguson also made headlines in January when the United States Department of Justice released a trove of Epstein Files including past emails, in which Ferguson referred to Epstein as a “spectacular and special friend” and “the brother I have always wished for.” (Ferguson previously addressed backlash surrounding their connection, stating, “I would never have anything to do with Jeffrey Epstein ever again. I abhor paedophilia and any sexual abuse of children. It was a gigantic error of judgment.”)

News of Ferguson’s return home comes days after Us confirmed that Harry, 41, and Meghan, 45, will be moving back across the pond six years after relocating to the United States. Multiple outlets reported that the couple are relocating their children, Prince Archie, 7, and daughter, Princess Lilibet, 5, to the U.K. for an extended period starting this month. Archie and Lilibet are scheduled to begin school in the U.K. next month.

“Harry is not as happy in the U.S. as he is in the U.K.,” a source exclusively told Us, adding that they “aim to be somewhere outside of London,” rather than directly in the city.

Harry and Meghan will reportedly keep their house in Montecito, California, and their vacation home in Portugal. They will have a non-royal property in Britain.

Earlier this week, multiple outlets reported that Meghan, Harry and their children were expected to arrive in England on Wednesday, August 26.

Going forward, Meghan and Harry are not expected to resume any official royal duties. Harry will be spending his time supporting multiple U.K.-based charities and patronages while Meghan will continue to run her lifestyle brand, As Ever.

“Harry still operates as if he were a member of the royal family when he evaluates opportunities,” an additional source told Us. “He’s seen royals who have left the royal family, like Sarah Ferguson, whose path he does not want to emulate. He wants to do things that are a right fit for him, but that can be very limiting. And, of course, they need to find ways to make money, so they are eager to find partnerships that are the right fit and fruitful for them.”

Norway’s King Harald V died on Friday, August 28. He was 89.

Harald had been hospitalized on August 17 with a bacterial blood infection.

His death comes just one day after the palace said that “His Majesty the King’s health has deteriorated” and “His Majesty the King’s health condition is very serious.”

Who Are Princess Martha Louise and Shaman Durek? 'Rebel Royals' Explained

Harald is survived by his wife, Queen Sonja, 89, daughter Princess Märtha Louise, 54, and son Crown Prince Haakon, 53, who was automatically crowned king upon Harald’s death.

Harald ruled for 35 years after succeeding his father, King Olav V, in 1991.

“It is with the most profound sadness that my wife and I have learned of the death of my dear cousin, King Harald V of Norway,” the U.K.’s King Charles III said in a statement on Friday.

The British monarch continued, “For 35 years, King Harald served his people with unwavering dedication, guiding Norway through times of great change with warmth and humility. As Norway mourns the loss of so towering a figure, my whole family join in remembering a much-loved kinsman and friend whose kindness, compassion and deep sense of duty echoed from across the sea and across the decades.”

“The United Kingdom and Norway share particularly close historical and family ties, with Britain one of the first countries to recognize Norwegian independence and establish diplomatic relations in 1905,” Charles said. “These special bonds were even further strengthened during the dreadful trials of the Second World War and helped to bind our two countries together.”

“Queen [Camilla] and I extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Queen Sonja and all her family, as Britain shares in Norway’s grief at this time of such heartbreaking loss,” he concluded.

Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said in a statement, “A whole nation is in mourning and the people of Norway are left with a deep sense of gratitude for a long life in the service of Norway.”

“For more than three decades as monarch, Harald V demonstrated an unwavering faith in the Norwegian people. He helped us to see the best in ourselves — and in one another,” Støre continued.

“King Harald found the words to bind us together when we needed them the most. He grieved with us after the attacks 22 July 2011,” Støre said. “He cheered with us when Norwegian athletes excelled. And he guided us, with warmth, wisdom and openness, towards a society with a place for everyone. King Harald had a profound love for Norway. And Norway had a profound love for King Harald.”

“Absolutely, it’s exciting! We would love to be able to find some time to visit,” the British socialite, 34, told The Mirror at the launch of her rosé brand Lala V at Hackstons in Knightsbridge, London, on Wednesday, August 26.

Earlier on Wednesday, the BBC reported that Harry, 41, and Meghan, 45, had arrived back in the U.K. with their two children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5.

According to The Telegraph, the Sussexes landed at Birmingham Airport around lunchtime. (Us reached out to reps for the couple for comment.)

News broke last week that Harry and Meghan were planning to move back to the U.K. for an extended period of time, with their kids set to begin school abroad in September. The relocation comes six years after the couple stepped down from their senior royal roles and moved to Montecito, California.

Harry and Meghan are expected to keep their home in Montecito during their stay in the U.K., as well as a vacation residence in Portugal.

Getty Images (2)

Us understands Harry’s father, King Charles III, learned of the pair’s move on August 16. The monarch, who has been estranged from his youngest son for years, is said to welcome the opportunity to see Harry and his family in a private and personal capacity. Charles, 77, has confirmed that Meghan and Harry will remain non-working members of the royal family, maintaining the couple’s wishes and agreements over past years.

According to People, Meghan is expected to continue leading her lifestyle brand, As Ever, from their U.K. home. Harry, meanwhile, is slated to spend time supporting U.K.-based charities and patronages.

Meghan Markle Shared Her 'Problem' With England Return 4 Years Before Move

A source exclusively told Us on August 20 that Harry, who married Meghan in 2018, was “not as happy” living in the U.S. after their royal exits.

“They aim to be somewhere outside of London, not in, like, the city proper,” the source shared. “They are open to a new chapter.”

The insider continued, “Harry still operates as if he were a member of the royal family when he evaluates opportunities.

As for whether the move can bridge the gap between Harry and his estranged brother, Prince William, former royal butler Grant Harrold exclusively told Us, “I doubt Harry’s move back to the U.K. is going to completely heal things between William and Harry. It will take a lot more than that. Too much happened. It will be a situation where actions mean more than words.”

Harrold added, “I think they will be poker-faced and play happy families, but behind the scenes it will take a lot more.”

People reported on Wednesday, August 19, that Harry, 41, and Meghan, 45, would be relocating with their children for an extended period of time starting this month. The pair’s children — son Prince Archie, 7, and daughter Princess Lilibet, 5 — are set to begin school there in September.

Harry and Meghan will continue to have a residence in Montecito, California, and their vacation home in Portugal while having the non-royal property in Britain, the outlet reported. King Charles III reportedly learned of his youngest son’s move on August 16, and is welcoming the opportunity to see Harry and Meghan and their family privately. (Us reached out to reps for Harry and Meghan for comment at the time.)

While William and Kate have yet to publicly react to Harry and Meghan’s move, a royal expert speculated how the couple might be processing the announcement.

“All I can think of is, ‘Here we go again.’ For starters, I can only imagine that William and Kate are tearing their hair out,” Brothers and Wives author Christopher Andersen exclusively told Us on Wednesday. “They have so much on their plate as it is trying to shore up the monarchy and propel it into the future; they don’t really need to cope with having Harry and Megan on their proverbial doorstep.”

Andersen added, “By returning to the U.K., the Sussexes will inevitably suck up all the oxygen in the room. They will generate countless tabloid stories and take the focus away from other members of the Royal family, which is a major no-no. King Charles and Queen Camilla, in particular, don’t like to be upstaged, and the same goes for William.”

“The duke is proud of his 10 years with African Parks and fully supports the ongoing strengthening of its board,” a spokesperson for the Duke of Sussex said in a statement to Us on Monday, August 24. “His commitment to conservation in Africa continues, and he remains a supporter of African Parks’ mission.”

Harry, 41, first joined African Parks, a nonprofit conservation organization that manages national parks and protected areas across Africa in partnership with governments and local communities, in 2016.

In 2023, he was appointed to an elevated role on the board of directors after serving as president.

The charity’s governance code states that “trustees are usually expected to serve for a term of no more than three years, and may be reappointed for further terms, up to a maximum of nine years.”

Harry stayed on a few extra months to ensure a managed transition as the nonprofit sought to find a replacement trustee in accordance with accepted good practice.

We are committed to addressing the shortcomings that have been identified. … The Board is confident that the institutional improvements implemented over the past five years, along with those planned for the coming months – incorporating valuable recommendations from Omnia – will mitigate risks in the future.”

Harry’s decision to step down comes as he prepares to move his family back to the U.K. after spending six years in Montecito, California.

Meghan Markle quit acting ahead of her 2018 royal wedding to Prince Harry and before the pair relocated to the United States. Now that the couple are preparing to return to England, is an acting comeback in Meghan’s future?

After securing a handful of TV and film roles, Meghan notably starred as paralegal-turned-attorney Rachel Zane for seven seasons of USA Network’s Suits from 2011 to 2017. She left ahead of the final season before she married Harry the following year.

“I don’t see it as giving anything up. I just see it as a change. It’s a new chapter,” Meghan told the BBC in November 2017 about her decision to walk away from Hollywood. “Also, keep in mind, I’ve been working on [Suits] for seven years. We were very, very fortunate to have that sort of longevity on a series.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex ultimately stepped down from their official duties as senior working royals in 2020 in favor of a private life with their two children, relocating from England to California. News broke six years later in August 2026 that Harry and Meghan would return to the U.K. in time for kids Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet to start school that fall semester.

Meghan Markle Signs With Talent Agency WME: Will She Return to Acting?

Amid Harry and Meghan’s move, Us learned that the former actress was in early talks to star in season 3 of Guy Ritchie’s The Gentleman. Meghan also had a bit part in Close Personal Friends, which was filmed in 2025.

Keep scrolling to read Meghan’s candid comments about walking away from acting — and whether she would consider returning to Hollywood:

Ready for a Change

While speaking with the BBC in November 2017, Meghan felt ready to leave Suits behind.

“I’ve ticked this box, and I feel very proud of the work I’ve done there, and now it’s time to work with [Harry] as a team,” she told the outlet. “I think what’s been really exciting as we talk about the transition out of my career and into my role is the causes that are really important to me that I can focus even more energy on.”

She’s ‘Done’

Meghan claimed to Variety in 2022 that she didn’t see herself acting again.

“I’m done,” she said. “I guess never say never, but my intention is to absolutely not.”

Years later, Meghan launched her short-lived “Archetypes” and “Confessions of a Female Founder” podcasts. She also appeared as herself on Netflix’s With Love, Meghan, which ran for two seasons and highlighted the duchess’ love of DIY projects, cooking and gardening.

Would Meghan Markle Let Her Kids Follow in Her Acting Footsteps?

The As Ever founder supported the idea when speaking with Variety in 2022.

“I would say, ‘Great!’ When you become a parent, you genuinely want your kids to find the things that bring them complete joy,” Meghan said. “They’re our kids, obviously, and they’re part of a legacy and a tradition and a family that will have other expectations. I want them to be able to carve out their own path. If it’s the entertainment industry, great, and also, good luck. There are so many people that will talk about what opened the door for my children, but it still takes talent and a lot of grit. We’re creating multidimensional, interesting, kind, creative people. That’s who our kids are.”

Speaking on Camera as Herself Felt Different

Two years after Harry and Meghan’s royal step-down, they sat down with director Liz Garbus for an eponymous Netflix docuseries.

“It’s nice to be able to trust someone with our story — a seasoned director whose work I’ve long admired — even if it means it may not be the way we would have told it,” Meghan told Variety in 2022. “That’s not why we’re telling it. We’re trusting our story to someone else, and that means it will go through their lens.”

She added at the time, “For me, having worked on Suits, it’s so amazing to be around so much creative energy and to see how people work together and share their own points of view. That’s been really fun.”

The Wales family of five were joined at the church by King Charles III, Queen Camilla, Princess Anne, Sir Timothy Laurence, Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie.

Just days earlier, news broke that Charles’ son Prince Harry planned to move back to England in time for his two kids with wife Meghan Markle to enroll in local schools for the fall semester.

Harry, 41, and Meghan, 45, initially stepped down from their duties as senior working royals in 2020 in favor of a private life with their kids Prince Archie, now 7, and Princess Lilibet, now 5. The stateside move soon sparked a rift between Harry and his father and brother.

Jeff J Mitchell/Getty Images

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have not publicly addressed their relocation, nor have any of Harry’s relatives. A royal expert, meanwhile, exclusively speculated how William and Kate took the announcement.

“All I can think of is, ‘Here we go again.’ For starters, I can only imagine that William and Kate are tearing their hair out,” Brothers and Wives author Christopher Andersen exclusively told Us on Wednesday, August 19.

A second royal expert, former palace butler Grant Harrold, similarly told Us that moves likely wouldn’t “completely heal things” between Harry and William.

“Too much happened. It will be a situation where actions mean more than words,” Harrold theorized. “Right now, I don’t see things healing. I think they will be poker-faced and play happy families, but behind the scenes it will take a lot more.”

Meanwhile, Harry’s relationship with Charles, 77, has slowly turned a corner amid the king’s ongoing battle with an undisclosed form of cancer. The duke recently brought Meghan and their kids to visit with Charles during a trip to the U.K. in July.

Former royal butler Grant Harrold has exclusively told Us that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may, in part, be moving back to the U.K. to get closer to King Charles III.

“I imagine King Charles has played a part in their decision, and Harry wanting to spend more time with his father,” Harrold, 48, says. “I think behind closed doors Harry and the King have been working hard to heal their relationship. Only so much can be done when they live so far apart, so I think this is Harry making his dad his priority, which is really nice to see.”

He adds, “I think the King will be delighted to have his son and daughter-in-law closer to home. He’s well aware that their rift will never be healed when they’re only seeing each other once a twice a year, this is the next step that’s needed if they want to heal their relationship.”

It was reported earlier this week that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex intend to relocate from their current residence in Montecito, California, in time for their son Prince Archie, 7, and daughter, Princess Lilibet, 5, to begin school in the U.K. in September.

The Sussexes most recently visited with the King, 77, and Queen Camilla at Highgrove House in Gloucestershire, England, on July 10 during Harry’s whirlwind U.K. trip to promote the Invictus Games. This was Charles’ first time seeing Harry and Meghan’s children in person in four years.

While Harrold suspects Charles will be “delighted” to see the Sussexes returning to the U.K., he hinted there may still be concerns about Harry’s ongoing rift with older brother Prince William and Princess Kate Middleton.

“I think the King will be concerned about William’s reaction. His biggest challenge is going to be acting as peace negotiation between his two sons,” the former royal butler predicts. “The King won’t just be thinking about the now, he’s thinking about the future.”

The king may have a tough task ahead of him since Harrold suspects that William, 44, may not be particularly willing to make peace with Harry, 41, at this stage following the shocking claims made in his book, Spare, and Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan.

The Duke of Sussex, however, said that he wanted to mend fences amid Charles’ ongoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer.

“I doubt Harry’s move back to the U.K. is going to completely heal things between William and Harry. It will take a lot more than that. Too much happened,” he tells Us. “It will be a situation where actions mean more than words. William will need to see Harry continuously making an effort to heal the rift. Right now, I don’t see things healing. I think they will be poker faced and play happy families, but behind the scenes it will take a lot more.”

According to reports, Harry and Meghan plan to keep their California residence and vacation property in Portugal. (Harry and Meghan moved into their coastal estate after stepping down as senior working royals in January 2020.)

Will Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's U.K. Move Change Their Royal Roles?

“All I can think of is: here we go again,” Andersen, 77, declared. “For starters, I can only imagine that William and Kate are tearing their hair out. They have so much on their plate as it is trying to shore up the monarchy and propel it into the future; they don’t really need to cope with having Harry and Megan on their proverbial doorstep.”

The royal expert hinted, “By returning to the U.K., the Sussexes will inevitably suck up all the oxygen in the room. They will generate countless tabloid stories and take the focus away from other members of the Royal family, which is a major no-no. King Charles and Queen Camilla, in particular, don’t like to be upstaged, and the same goes for William.”
