Lupita Nyong’o Talks Skin With Elmo on Sesame Street: Watch the Video

Lupita and Elmo love the skin they’re in! Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o stopped by Sesame Street on Tuesday, Sept. 16, where she and her furry friend Elmo talked about the body’s largest organ.

“Today Elmo and Lupita are going to tell you all about skin,” the Sesame Street standout tells viewers.

“Did you know all animals and people are covered in skin?” the actress, 31, asks an incredulous Elmo. “Not Elmo!” he responds. “Elmo’s covered in fur.”

The two then proceed to go back and forth about the purpose of skin. “Our skin covers our whole body to protect it, Elmo. You can use your skin to feel if something is rough…” the 12 Years a Slave star explains. “Skin comes in lots of beautiful shades and colors.”

Nyong’o didn’t always exude such natural confidence. At the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon in early 2014, she told the audience: “I remember a time when I too felt unbeautiful.”

The Kenyan-born, Mexican-raised actress was announced this past spring as the first African-American face of Lancome cosmetics. Nyong’o also hit another big milestone in her career as Vogue‘s July 2014 issue cover girl. “She knows the camera, she knows her angles,” the magazine’s executive fashion editor, Phyllis Posnick, noted of the gorgeous star.
