Miley Cyrus has an explanation for her recent ring-less excursions. The 20-year-old singer-actress has returned to Twitter after taking a self-imposed "break" last week amid increased scrutiny on the noticeable distance -- literal and figurative -- between her and fiance Liam Hemsworth. Chatting with a pal on the social media site on Thursday (March 14), Cyrus quickly empathized with another engaged friend.

"Had to send off my engagement ring today to get fixed," the star's friend wrote. "One of the little diamonds fell out... I feel naked without it." Cyrus quickly chimed in, suggesting that her own engagement from Hemsworth, 23, is also out for repairs: "Ugh that's the worst! I just had a similar situation except when it happens to me then everyone says my wedding is off."

Last week -- just before Cyrus' Twitter exile -- the former Hannah Montana star stepped out two nights in a row in L.A. without her engagement band on her finger, and similarly insisted via Twitter that the wedding with Hemsworth was still on. Her Last Song costar is currently visiting with family in his native Australia.

Regardless, things have definitely been strained for the young couple, who've been butting heads over the past few months over a variety of issues -- including Cyrus' wild new look and Hemsworth's reported makeout session in Hollywood with an A-list actress.

Engaged since last June, the pair were having "the worst fights of their relationship" before Hemsworth split for Down Under, one source told Us Weekly. During Hemsworth's sojourn, "Miley and Liam are talking," another friend assures Us, "But he needed a beat."
