Tom Cruise Talks ‘Top Gun 2’ Rumors: ‘We’re Discussing It’

Say it is so! Tom Cruise addressed rumors of a possible Top Gun 2 during a new interview with Graham Norton on Friday, October 21, playing coy as the talk show host tried to get a solid confirmation.

“We don’t really associate Tom Cruise with franchises or sequels and yet — exciting news — is there going to be a Top Gun 2?” Norton asked Cruise, 54, during his appearance on the show to promote new flick Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.

Cruise betrayed no emotion as he stoically shook his head: “No.”

“Oh, come on!” a clearly antsy Norton, 53, said.

“Yes, we’re discussing it,” the veteran action star allowed. “We’re discussing it. We’re trying to figure it out.”

Rumors of a possible sequel to the hit 1986 film began to swirl earlier this year, when director Jerry Bruckheimer tweeted a photo of himself with Cruise and hinted that the pair had been chatting about reviving the story.

“Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2,” the director captioned the image.

Even if a second dose of the adrenaline-laden flick isn’t yet in the works, however, Cruise and Norton had a blast talking about one of the action star’s riskiest tricks for his latest role: holding his breath underwater for six and a half minutes.

“From the time you get rid of the regulators, get rid of the bubbles, get on the side, and you want to do it in one shot — they’re very, very long shots — I’d have to hold [my breath] safely, consistently, up to four minutes for each take,” Cruise said, causing the audience to gasp.

“We were committed, everything was set up,” Cruise continued. “You have these free divers who came in and trained me how to do it. It’s not pleasant. You get to the moment where you train your system [so well]. I’m controlling the breath. … I trained to the point where I’d be sitting there talking in meetings and I wouldn’t breathe. I’d realize I wasn’t breathing and I had to turn my autonomic system back on to breathe again.”

Fellow guest Jude Law looked appalled at the feat, and when Norton tried to steer the conversation to the Closer star’s own experiences holding his breath in an underwater scene, Law was quite to demur the compliment.

“It really wasn’t that long,” he said with a laugh.
