Celebrity Kids on the Red Carpet: Then and Now
Mom’s mini-me! Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber’s daughter, who was born in September 2001, has wanted to follow in the model’s footsteps since she was little. She landed a Young Versace ad at just 10. “It’s not like I never dreamed it could happen because it’s really all I dreamed about,” she told Pop magazine in August 2016. “But I never thought it’d happen this early.”
What a cutie! Victoria and David Beckham’s eldest son, who was born in March 1999, had big ambitions, like his famous parents, from an early age. "I'm hoping to study art and photography in the U.S., once I have finished my A Levels," he told Miss Vogue in November 2015. "I love football, but I'm also very passionate about photography and film. I'm keeping my options open right now."
Beckham grew up in front of the camera. In 2014, he made his modeling debut on the cover of Man About Town magazine's Spring/Summer 2014 issue. He later had a high profile romance with Chloë Grace Moretz after meeting the actress in August 2014. (Us Weekly confirmed in September 2016 that they split.)
Exes Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe have remained amicable while raising their children since ending their eight-year marriage in 2007. (Ava was born in September 1999 and Deacon in October 2003.) Phillippe joked in March 2015 that Ava doesn’t like having such a young-looking dad. “My daughter hates it because sometimes people have thought I’m her brother, and she’s freaked out by that,” he told Variety.
Hudson told Marie Claire’s 2016 issue that her son is why she keeps her dating life private. "The reason I don't talk about anything like that is because I have kids," she said. "People ask that question as if, 'Oh yeah, it's really healthy to publicly talk about who I am or am not dating when I've got a tween.' [Ryder] can read, and he can hear. I’m not going to indulge in that kind of thing until there's someone in my life who I am introducing to my kids."
First children! President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama’s daughters (born July 1998 and June 2001) were thrown into the spotlight when POTUS won the presidential election in 2008. "They're smart, they're funny. They take after their mom, and Michelle's done a great job with them,” Obama said in GQ's 20th Anniversary Men of the Year issue in November 2015. "And my understanding is… that with a little bit of luck, as long as you're not so completely annoying during these teenage years, they'll come back to you around 23, 24, and actually want to hang out with you.”
To the next chapter. In September 2016, FLOTUS opened up about how life will change for her daughters once her husband finishes his second presidential term. "I'm sure the girls will have a tough time,” she told Ellen DeGeneres. “Think about it: The girls have grown up in the White House. I mean, the staff that's there – we see them every day. These are people who have helped us raise our kids.”
Travis Barker and his ex-wife Shanna Moakler continue to raise their two kids, Landon and Alabama, together, despite splitting in 2006. They were born in October 2004 and December 2005, respectively. “My kids come before everything,” the Blink 182 drummer exclusively told Us Weekly in his 25 Things You Don’t Know About Me feature in March 2011. “I cook my kids breakfast every morning [and] Landon and I train in mixed martial arts together.”
Three’s company! Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos met on set of the TV soap All My Children before settling down and having three children — Michael (born June 1997), Lola (born June 2001) and Joaquin (born February 2003). In November 2014, the daytime talk show host opened up about her parenting style. "[Lola] recently lost her computer and phone privileges, so it's like taking away oxygen,” she told Wendy Williams. "I don't think she likes me, but I don't care. I’m like, 'I'm not your friend! I'm your mom.'"
In November 2015, Ripa got emotional while discussing Michael’s college plans. “It goes so fast,” she said on Live With Kelly and Michael. “Sometimes your kids just want to be acknowledged and listened to like they matter, because they do… and really hear what they are saying. Like if there's a struggle going on, if they are having problems with a subject [in school]. They can tell you so much if you just listen."
Creative family! Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith’s kids have both made their mark in Hollywood. Jaden, born in July 1998, is an actor, photographer and model. Willow, born in October 2000, is a musician. She’s best known for her 2010 debut single, “Whip My Hair,” which she released when she was 9 years old.
Too far? Fresh Prince of Bel-Air alum Will admitted in February 2016 that he and Pinkett-Smith “may have gone too far” encouraging Jaden and Willow. “I think it may have been a mistake,” he joked during a radio interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra. “Jaden is 100 percent fearless. He will do anything. As a parent, it’s scary; it’s really terrifying, but he is completely willing to live and die by his own artistic decisions, and he just doesn’t concern himself with what people think.”
