Prayers answered? How I Met Your Mother's executive producer Carter Bays announced that an alternate ending to the series finale will be featured on the show's complete DVD collection via Twitter on Friday, April 4.
"16 days ago today we were in the HIMYM edit room, trying to decide between two very different endings," Bays wrote, four days after the comedy's finale aired. "We only shot one script, but through edit room magic we had two possible outcomes for the series."
"We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it. But we loved the other version too," he continued. "We're going to include that version on the Complete Series DVD as an alternate finale to How I Met Your Mother."
The CBS sitcom received major backlash on March 31 when its finale included a divorce, a death, and a reconciliation between exes Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) and Robin (Cobie Smulders). Many die-hard fans felt betrayed, and took out their frustration on social media. Others, however, including Radnor himself, praised the writers for their brazen move.
"I think if you're going to do something new and bold and daring, you're going to upset some people and you're going to thrill others," Radnor told Vulture in a post-mortem interview. "I think it's better to do that than try to have some homogenized, safe ending that was never really what the show was."
"The show was always bold and daring and questioning assumptions and leading you where you thought you didn't want to go, but realized at the end that that was where you belonged," he continued. "I'm a fan of the finale and obviously I'm a fan of the show."
