Undercover! Matt Damon pulled off a hilarious joke recently when he pranked unsuspecting strangers — Jason Bourne–style. The actor teamed up with Omaze for the stint to help raise money for his charity, Water.org, which helps organizations create their own water supply systems.
For the gag, the Great Wall star, 45, stayed hidden while a man in on the fun would pass off a phone to people walking in a park. Damon, without revealing who he was, would ask the participants to take part in random schemes.
Damon took full advantage of the situation, which was filmed. His comments quickly went from alarming (“Is there blood anywhere near you?”) to amusing. “Do you see the hot dog stand behind you? You need to go buy a hot dog,” he tells a male bystander.
The confused guy doesn’t give in, and replies: “Those hot dogs are like $14, man.”
Damon kept the charade going with two women. He directed one of them to give a package to a man who was obviously nowhere to be found. “You’re going to say one simple sentence to him and then he’ll give you the package,” he orders. “You’re going to say, ‘Elephants can swim.'”
Many who spoke with the Oscar winner either cursed or dropped the phone. Others who stayed on long enough were asked to pick up a manila envelope and were eventually led to Damon, who was waiting for them in a special location.
The prank, which left Damon in a fit of laughter, paid off for those who met the star. He gave them free tickets to the July premiere of his new film, Jason Bourne. Other fans of the movies can donate to Water.org to win prizes such as Jason Bourne dog tags, T-shirts, posters and more.
