First Duggar Grandchild Is Born!

Friday – October 09, 2009 – 9:34am

The first Duggar grandchild has arrived.

On Thursday night, Josh Duggar -- the eldest of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar's 18 children -- and wife Anna welcomed a baby girl.

Mackynzie Renee Duggar weighed 8 pounds and 19 1/2 inches, according to the Today show.

Mackynzie will be in good company, considering that she has 17 aunts and uncles and another one on the way: In September, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar announced they were expecting their 19th child in the spring.

Despite soon having 19 kids to look after, Michelle Duggar told the Today show, "We're really excited about being grandparents. [Josh and Anna] are going to make great parents."

Josh and Anna, who are both 20, wed Sept. 26, 2008, at the Buford Grove Baptist Church in Hilliard, Fla., after meeting at a home-schoolers' conference in 2006.

He said it was love at first sight.

After a two-year period of supervised courtship - in which they were allowed to hold hands but not smooch - they tied the knot, kissing for the first time at the alter.

For the wedding -- which was featured on their TLC show, which has since been renamed 18 Kids and Counting -- Anna made all the bridesmaids herself and the Duggars piled in a used bus they had purchased from a hockey team to drive from their Tonitown, Ark. home for the Florida ceremony.

Asked in June what kind of parents he and Anna will be, Josh (who runs his own car dealership in Springdale, Ark.) told the Today show: "I think you can prepare only in so many ways, but really just realizing that you can be a role model for that child and be as prepared as you can be."

Will he have as many kids as his parents?

"We'd be happy with two or three," Josh said. "I think that children are a blessing though and when you raise them right they're a great blessing."

Josh's sibs include twins Jana and John-David, 19; Jill, 18; Jessa, 16; Jinger, 15; Joseph, 14; Josiah, 13; Joy-Anna, 11; twins Jedidiah and Jeremiah, 10; Jason, 9; James, 8; Justin, 6; Jackson, 5; Johanna, 3; Jennifer, 2 and Jordyn-Grace, 9 months.

The children in this family are just surrogate parents for younger siblings. There is no way that Jim/Michelle can give all the children in the family the love and attention they need. The children I really pity. The parents I find to be idiotic.

I love the Duggars. They are precious. I look at them in a much different way since I read their book. I think of all the babies and children who are being raised in the Lord. I would be happy if my grandsons to marry a Dugger...JoHanna or Jennifer, or Jordan!! God bless you. Here's one for you...my husband always watches sports all the time. Now he makes sure I tell him when the Duggars are on. You are in our prayers and I am so impressed with Michelle and Jim Bob and how obedient the children are.

Kat says: . Children with birth defects are beautiful though and bless their parents lives just as much as any other child! Spoken with all the insight of someone who has never had to raise a disabled child. The Duggars have 18 children and Michelle is 42. Why take risks that are unnecessary? It is immoral. Also, Jason and Anna were very lucky. A home birth can be dangerous. Things can happen in a split second and the child pays for it forever. This is what happens when immature people who think they know it all and are somehow protected by God from the risks in life make foolish decisions.

They weren't allowed to do anything more serious than hold hands for two years? That sounds torturous.

I'm not trying to be funny or mean, but who are these people? I keep hearing about them and seeing headlines. This is the first time I skimmed an article about them. We really need to stop focusing on people who have no other talent but to procreate. We don't need a Jon & Kate 2.0 somewhere down the line. ... That's just my opinion.

This family is pathetic! Can you imagine if all families in the world would do this. Even in illiterate unprotected naive countries, they don't do this. Poor, poor kids...exploited for good measure.

11:35am Anonymous, nothing different will happen if she ever gives birth to a child with birth defects. They consider all children a gift from God, not just the 'perfect' ones! Also, anyone at any age can give birth to a child with a birth defect, although yes, the chances of some birth defects increase as we age. Children with birth defects are beautiful though and bless their parents lives just as much as any other child!

  • October 10, 2009 - 12:42pm Not possible... Says:

11:45pm Anonymous I don't think you understand how science works. There is no way that all women would ever be able to have 19 children. Some women are unable to conceive, others have miscarriages, some have X amount of children (far less than 19) and then for whatever reason have no more children, some have children and something goes wrong thus rendering them unable to have more children, some men are unable to produce children, the list goes on and on. Your hypothesis is scientifically impossible. Also, to those criticizing them for their beliefs, religious or regarding having children, I thought we were a nation that was trying to promote diversity? Why is it that we stick up for every other thing and people's right to do it except when it involves religion? Also, whatever your opinion I think that it creates a much more productive conversation when you do not name call, young children name call, not mature adults.

Just gross. This is more like multiple litters than a family. It's not really about the kids but about the process of factory line pregnancies in the name of Jaysus. But hey, if they love just popping them out like puppies then that is their perogative. But a TV show about them? Please, who watches crapola like that?
