Adam Lambert: People Aren't Used to Seeing a Sexual "Gay Man" on TV

Tuesday – December 01, 2009 – 10:20am

Among the people who weren't thrilled with Adam's Lambert's controversial American Music Awards performance: His dad.

"My dad was like, 'Maybe you should apologize, Adam,'" he says on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Tuesday "I was like, "You know, dad, I don't feel like I did anything wrong. It just wasn't maybe the right judgment call. It's a taste thing more than an obscenity thing. I think it's just a taste level.'"

During his performance, he smooched another guy, simulated oral sex and flipped off the audience, Looking back, "maybe that wasn't the best first impression to make again," Lambert, 27, says. "I mean, I had fun up there, I had a good time, my dancers had fun and the band had fun."

Still, he said he felt people walked away from his performance "feeling disrespected. I would never intend to disrespect anybody. So that was not my intention."

See how Adam Lambert has changed since his Idol days

He said that "people aren't used to seeing gay man portrayed that way on TV. The gay male image in the media tends to be very cliche and safe ... I think I got up there and put more energy ... I was putting on a character, putting on a persona, being this kind of rock star, kind of dangerous kind of guy. After seeing one of my favorites Lady Gaga tear it apart on stage ... I don't know something came over me, and I got caught up in the moment and maybe went a little too far."

As for being canceled on ABC's Good Morning America, Lambert says he isn't upset at the network.

"I don't blame them," he says. "They gave me a great opportunity to close the AMAs, and I would never want to smack that gift horse in the mouth. I think they were taking a leap of faith having me do that, and it unfortunately didn't work out as we all thought it would."

Ms. Clark, what you are saying is cliche, in that "what's the difference if they see that or if those and lots other children/teens watch nude and rate R movies..." -- the difference is that the AMA's are, uh, NOT RATED, in which nude and rated "R" movies obviously are. If we all knew it was going to be rated R, then we'd have a heads up, but we didn't. And who cares if it was Adam being himself, let him do it without making us all watch. He is a talented boy, who needs not gyrating pen?ses and vag?nas to prove that. I was thrilled to just know he would be on the show and I'd (was hoping anyways) get to hear his awesome voice. But instead it was he, himself, who underplayed his talent by overplaying genitals and finger flippings. It was just really stupid considering the raw amazing talent he has; what gives with the bedroom escapades on stage?? I mean, who cares if he is gay?? Obviously HE has a problem with feeling we don't like it more than we actually do?? I could care less what his preference in gender is as a mate?? WHO CARES?? That is old--get on with the voice talent Adam and quit the stupid "trying to prove a point" crap?? We like you for your voice, not your ability to tickle genitals and thrust heads...go figure

One more thing: People say that his performance or his artistic ways airing on tv was bad for children and teens to see, well whats the difference if they see that or if those and lots other children/teens watch nude and rated R movies Man theres lots of young teens out there that are getting pregnant and or having babies already when there just children themselfs and who cares if hes gay thats his life and people should leave him alone hes just following his dream so leave him be!

You know I think that the performance that Adam made on stage at the AMA's was just Adam being himself, he was just enjoying what he loves to do and thats Music. All I will say is he did a great job and he should just be himself dont change because others want him to. Make yourself happy not others happy!!!!

He should apologize, that performance was revolting.

If Adam calls what he did on AMA artistic,I THINK HE HAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH HIM.Michael Jackson was an artist..truely intertaining without being gross. Why can't artist today find a way of being artistic without being gross? Putting someones head in your crutch, simulating putting your fingers into a woman's vagina, to me is not artistic...Moonwalk was. See Adam you can be artistic without being gross. AL is a disgrace to AI.AI has always been one of the shows I allow my children to watch. If Adam is what you can expect AI to become ,I'll have to tivo it to make sure porn is hopefully not the way AI is headed.

Jeff, I heard that by the time the show hit the west coast, Adam's performance had been edited. It was after 11 PM on the east coast, a time when young children should be in bed on a school night. Commenting on stupid posts such as the one from Jamie is my perogative, of course. Many others have pointed out that the little kiddies should've been in bed by the time Adam's performance was aired. As for teenagers being up at that late time, that is acceptable and I'd bet the performance wasn't too shocking to them anyway! Teenagers definitely know more than they used to and have become more tolerant of most people. Ignorant comments such as Jamie's just goes to show how many homophobes are really out there and how many folks do not treat human beings equally.

I bet this next comment won't be posted. I think it is very revealing that I posted a comment talking about what an amazing performer Adam is, never once using profanity, yet my comments were blocked because this site said I wrote a word that describes a part of the lower face. Since when is the word (rhymes with fin) profanity. It makes me wonder alot about this publication.(Bet this won't be posted).

ANYONE dissing Blake Lewis here has serious issues. Check out Blake's new album [Heartbreak On Vinyl, released Oct. 6, 2009] before you say anything. Anyway, Go Adam! Stay true to yourself, no apologies.

Molly, attacking other people because they don't agree with you is not helping Adam. Who are you to judge whether kids can stay up? Did you forget there are different time zones and some saw Adam's "performance as early as 9:00? All schools don't open early, some have two shifts for kids. The "time" argument doesn't hold water.

Jamie has got to be on drugs! LOL Since Jamie could be male or female, I will consider this person an "it" with secret fantasies of coming out of the closet. Poor thing - JUST DO IT. Don't be jealous of Adam, honey. You too can come out. The behaviors aren't learned and you know it. Impressionable kids need to be in bed by 11 PM on a school night. Now, THAT'S just bad parenting.
  • December 02, 2009 - 2:59pm Jamie Says:

I don't think that these "learned" behaviors need to be seen on television by many impressionable kids. Go back to the closet, please.

Bedroom antics belong in the bedroom, not on a nationally broadcast television show. Adam went to far and rather than own up to it he makes excuses. Straight or gay what he did was vulgar and tasteless. He'd have been better off concentrating on his vocals. But he excused that too, blaming the acoustics. He blew his big chance.

There are no homophobes here. No one performance doesn't make the man, although this was certainly a high profile perf which suffered due to bad singing & too much shock value. And, Adam was pretty much like his AMA perf during the Am Idol tour .... he sort of made love to the microphone .... & when it was mentioned too him that children in the audience might be affected, he more or less said that was not his problem. I do not call what Adam did being artistic nor do I call it being yourself. You have to have some boundries or know what is appropriate for what performance. He obviously did not know what was appropriate for the AMA perf & for that matter the AI tour. I think there were a lot of people looking forward to seeing what Adam could do on the AMA's .... & I think most of those people (who were probably casually interested & might have purchased his CD) were completely shocked & wondering what the heck after his perf.
  • December 02, 2009 - 9:28am Reality Says:

This should not be on public TV. It would be nice if families could watch the VMS'S together. This was inappropriate as are many other off the wall performances. Could we just get back to entertainment that doesn't verge on porn? Please!
  • December 01, 2009 - 11:38pm Free2b Says:

It's ok to be gay, out, and sexy during a performance. But - a man's head in the crotch is a little beyond sexy and should be reserved for the bedroom or an X-rated show that indicates such. As for Clay Aiken - and other gays who chose to be more private about their sexuality - are they less deserving of understanding and respect because they didn't come out of the closet to suit someone else's timeline? There are a number of gay actors who keep their sexuality private because of not getting equal acting roles as their straight counterparts. Should they be scorned because they want to work? Since when did it become permissible to perform sexual acts in public as a form of entertainment? Adam Lambert may be a talented guy - but his attitude stinks!!
  • December 01, 2009 - 11:21pm Carole Says:

I am just disappointed that Adam didn't take the great opportunity he had to make a good lasting impression on people and make them want to buy his album. He has a great voice but he was so busy strutting his stuff, his singing suffered. That was not the way to make fans and leave a lasting good impression on those who may have become fans. You can't liken Adam to Clay. Being gay means nothing. They are who they are and saying they are both gay is like saying they are both white, American etc. The two of them have a completely different set of standards and each of them has to live their lives as they see fit. I feel sorry for Adam that he doesn't realize that his voice alone would make him a rock star and the theatrics weren't necessary.

Adam Lambert is a grosser version of Blake Lewis. Who is Blake you ask? He was going to be the next big thing only he wasn't.
  • December 01, 2009 - 11:08pm Judy Says:

You know...his performance has nothing to do with being straight, gay, white, black or whatever, as far as I am concerned... I don't care what your orientation is....shoving someones face in your crotch, fingering a woman on a pole over your head. I could care less about the kiss, and then giving the finter at the end...??? This was completely done in bad taste, and was done for shock value only....I am anything but homophobic...but this kind of behaviour on national television is pathetic and Adam showed absolutely no class.. He didn't need to do this for attention. What bothers me more than anything is that he is ok with it, without even thinking it was in bad taste. No thanks Adam...you absolutely showed no class at all.
  • December 01, 2009 - 10:41pm Beanblossom Says:

Well............. all I can say is - if it sounds like sh*t, and looks like sh*t - then it's sh*t. Can't say if it smelled like sh*t - you'd have to ask the guy Adam "shoved" into his crotch. This has not one thing to do with gay or straight - just bad taste and bad singing.
