This Is It Earns $101 Million Worldwide; Run Extended Through Thanksgiving

Monday – November 02, 2009 – 10:07am

Fans flocked to movie theaters this weekend to remember the King of Pop and see his last moments, as played out on the big screen in This Is It.

The documentary, which includes rehearsal footage of Michael Jackson, 51, prepping for his ill-fated "This Is It" London concert tour at Los Angeles' Staples Center just hours before he died of cardiac arrest, was so well received in its first five days that distributor Sony has extended the film's run until Thanksgiving.

Directed by High School Musical's Kenny Ortega, the concert exceeded even Sony's expectations, earning $2.2 million on opening night.

"The numbers are incredible, and we got some of the highest exit polls we've ever seen," Sony worldwide prexy of distribution Rory Bruer said. "It goes far beyond being a concert movie. Kenny Ortega created a film that is compelling and exciting and an incredible tribute to the King of Pop."

The concert film narrowly beat out Miley Cyrus' Hannah Montana: The Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, which earned $31.1 million in its opening weekend compared to This Is It's take of $32.5 million.

Us Weekly's senior movie editor Bradley Jacobs gave the film four stars, writing that "it's a highly charged, personal and captivating peek at the last few weeks of a man who certainly didn't look close to death."

...and that it didn't come close to beating (shudder) Hannah Montanna, which made 30+ million in its opening weekend while This Is It took five days to get there??? Two major fact-check errors in a few short paragraphs. I'm gonna find me a new magazine to read.

The movie shows a gentle MJ, who is at the same time a perfectionist. He was SO respectful of his crew, dancers- everyone. Even when he had to correct them it was done so softly and often w/ humor. He really loved them all and it was mutual. I can see why everyone that has worked with him has said he had no airs. That in itself is amazing. It would have been the most amazing concert. For those of you that never took the time to know MJ, do it now. Some thought he was odd, even a molester but the more I learn about him, I see the opposite. He was just a child in a man's body due to his sheltered (from the real world) lifestyle. He loved children in a pure way that so many in this corrupt world can understand. As for the movie- he was amazingly fit and wow, he sure could do those moves. Even when the dancers did the same moves and were excellent, no one on earth could do them as well as MJ- it was almost as if he were programmed or mechanical (in a good way) as his body moves were so timed and fluid. I walked out feeling sad but lifted. I think he would have been proud of the movie.
