Former View cohost Star Jones and her husband Al Reynolds are suing The National Enquirer, a rep for the couple confirms to Us.

The legal action is in response to an article published in the tabloid's October 2, 2006 issue titled "Star Jones' Husband Walks Out!" The couple's attorney, Bob Chapman, sent a demand letter to The Enquirer, stating that the article is "false and defamatory" and has done "grave damage to their reputations, both publicly and privately."

The letter continues, "You have also chosen to state that Mr. Reynolds is gay. While Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds believe that everyone should be free to make their own choice concerning sexual preference and that there is nothing wrong with being gay, you have nonetheless chosen to falsely state that Mr. Reynolds is gay."

A rep for the couple told Us: "Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds have tried to handle these vicious lies and attempts at character assassination with quiet dignity for far too long...Now they will pursue immediate legal action against anyone who makes false statements about their family."

Last month, the tabloid reported that Jones, 44, has been “slashing costs drastically” and “pressuring her husband to make more money” since being unceremoniously axed from the ABC morning talk show last June.

In March 2006, The Enquirer broke the story that Jones suffered severe blood loss and nearly died due to complications from a breast lift operation, as her husband suffered his own head injury from an accident at a NYC gym the same day. Jones’ rep later confirmed the story to be true.

A month prior, the tabloid reported that the couple was on the rocks and suggested that rumors about Reynolds' sexual orientation were to blame.
