She did it again! Lauren Conrad has a habit of rocking the prettiest hairstyles that we all want to emulate, and her latest — debuted by her stylist, Kristen Ess, via Instagram on Thursday, October 6 — is no different. Say hello to Conrad’s dreamy new shag!
“I’m super inspired by the ’70s shag right now, but a lot of people don’t want that many layers,” Ess tells Stylish. “This cut is really just a play off of that style, done in a more modern way.”
So what did she do to give it that 2016 spin? “We didn’t cut much of anything off the length — we really just layered into it,” Ess, who also works with Lucy Hale and Halle Berry, explains. “I added a lot of thinned-out, shorter layers [with a razor]. Then, I used thinning shears to thin out the ends of those layers, to make sure they could be blended in easily. These layers will never be too bulky, choppy or short.”
While Ess agrees that the cut isn’t a huge change for Conrad, 30, who was rocking a slightly longer, more uniformly layered style before this, she loves that the Celebrate author was willing to experiment with a little edge. “It’s just something different for her,” the stylist says. “She’s had the same general shape for a long time, and we play with color. But we’ve never really cut lots of layers into her hair before, so it’s a nice change.”
And luckily for her, her No. 1 client is all for the mini-makeover. “She loves having more layers,” Ess reveals. “It seems to be pretty easy for her.”
