Hailey Baldwin doesn’t understand the appeal of Taylor Swift‘s girl squad. The 20-year-old model threw shade at the 26-year-old singer’s exclusive group of friends in a new interview with Yahoo7 Be.
“I don’t understand the Taylor Swift squad at all,” Baldwin told the Australian news site on Monday, December 5. “I don’t know what having a squad means. I just have my friends and that’s it.”
“I don’t think that you need to create a public squad,” the 5-foot-8 blonde beauty, who is the daughter of actor Stephen Baldwin, continued. “I don’t know what that proves. So I don’t really understand the Taylor Swift squad at all.”
Despite her comments, Baldwin shares several close friends with Swift, including Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner.
The model also told Yahoo7 Be that she celebrated her 20th birthday last month with a small group of friends at an intimate gathering. “I was just with some of my really close friends — my sister, my cousin — and we just did a little 48-hour trip,” she explained. “We were in Canada and it was just low-key and fun and it was exactly what I wanted.”
Swift, meanwhile, often travels to public appearances and awards shows with her elite circle of squad members, including Selena Gomez — who, like Baldwin, previously dated Justin Bieber — Karlie Kloss and Hailee Steinfeld.
Earlier this year, Demi Lovato slammed Swift for curating a group of women who represent unattainable beauty standards.
“It’s not realistic,” the “Confident” singer, 24, told Glamour magazine in October. “And I think that having a song and a video about tearing Katy Perry down [“Bad Blood”], that’s not women’s empowerment. We all do things that aren’t but I have to ask myself, ‘Am I content with calling myself a feminist?’ Yes, because I speak out.”
