Sorry, Miss Jackson! Super Bowl 50’s Halftime Show was a major production, with performances by Coldplay, Beyoncé and Bruno Mars, plus a montage of some of the most memorable Halftime Shows of all time. But the montage left out at least one huge headline-making act: Janet Jackson, whose infamous nip slip at Super Bowl XXXVIII inspired the phrase “wardrobe malfunction.”
Janet’s sister LaToya Jackson took note of the omission and posted about it on Twitter late Sunday, February 7.
The energy of #SB50 #PepsiHalftime show was great! Beyoncé Coldplay and Bruno Mars!??????
But what happened to Janet Jackson in the montage!— La Toya Jackson (@latoyajackson) February 8, 2016
Janet’s performance is indeed one of the most talked-about moments in Super Bowl history. Back in 2004, the pop superstar shared the stage with celebs including Diddy, Nelly and Kid Rock. The finale was a duet with Justin Timberlake to “Rock Your Body.”
In the last few seconds of the track — which ends with the line, “I’m gonna have you naked by the end of this song” — Timberlake ripped off a piece of Janet’s top, exposing her pasty-adorned breast for millions of viewers to see.
The “No Sleeep” singer, 49, and Timberlake, 35, later claimed the nip slip was unintentional, but it nonetheless led to FCC fines and even lawsuits. It also inspired the implementation of a tape delay for live broadcasts.
The controversy may explain why Janet was left out of the montage. But Super Bowl 50 did feature a nod to another member of the Jackson family.
Beyoncé, 34, who gave the first live performance of her brand-new single, “Formation,” paid homage to the late Michael Jackson by wearing a military-inspired jacket like the one he donned for his Super Bowl performance in 1993.
