About

Tim Daly (born James Timothy Daly) is an actor, producer and director best known for starring in Wings, Private Practice and Madam Secretary. He is the son of actors James Daly and Hope Newell and the younger brother of actress Tyne Daly. Tim grew up in a family immersed in the entertainment industry and attended Bennington College in Vermont, where he studied theater before leaving to pursue an acting career.

After making his screen debut in the late 1970s, Tim steadily built his résumé with early film and television appearances in projects including Ryan’s Four and Spellbinder (1988) before landing his breakout part as Joe Hackett on the NBC sitcom Wings. The show ran from 1990 to 1997 and established him as a familiar face on television, leading to a string of high-profile projects. He went on to star in series including The Fugitive, The Sopranos, Private Practice and Madam Secretary. His role as J.T. Dolan on The Sopranos earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series in 2007.

Throughout his career, Tim has also worked extensively on stage and behind the camera as a producer and director. He is also widely known as the longtime voice of Superman in multiple animated projects beginning with Superman: The Animated Series, which aired from 1996 to 2000.

Daly married actress Amy Van Nostrand in 1982, and they welcomed two children: Sam Daly (born in 1984) and Emelyn Daly (born in 1989). The couple divorced in 2010. He later dated his Madam Secretary costar Téa Leoni after they met on the CBS drama, and the pair tied the knot in 2025.
