When Drew Barrymore announced on Instagram on Thursday, December 20, that she'd lost 25 pounds, it was just the latest before-and-after version of the body-positive actress that she’s shown to her fans. Famous since age 7 when E.T. the Extraterrestrial became a major blockbuster in 1982, Barrymore has spent nearly her entire life in the public eye. Now 43, the decades in between have contained many highs and lows for the Santa Clarita Diet star, including a stint in rehab at age 12. The actress, producer and beauty mogul’s weight has also fluctuated throughout the years. At 15 years old, Barrymore — attending a premiere for the film The Freshman — was a frequenter of the party scene. “It’s almost like I never was at home,” she recalled in InStyle’s February 2018 issue. “I was always out and about.”

The Flower Beauty creator, who visited The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon seven months after welcoming her second daughter, Frankie, considers herself a realistic optimist. “I like fun and empowerment and things that have some broader message of positivity,” she has said. “Not a vacant happiness, but an expression of hard-earned happiness, which is the better kind.”

Barrymore was honored at a NYC event for the ASPCA. “After making two babies, holy cow, does your body do some crazy stuff! It's hard to stay positive and love yourself,” she told Glamour in 2015. “You feel like a kangaroo with a giant pouch; everything's saggy and weird. "I'd drive myself nuts if I were [obsessed with body image],” Barrymore (guesting on a 2016 episode of Bravo’s Odd Mom Out) has said. “I am who I am, and I just don't have a bikini body, I don't even have a one-piece any more. The messages we send to ourselves and to other women, what we relay to our children, those messages have to be based on reality."

January 2017

Diet changes helped the actress (at the 2017 Golden Globes) drop about 20 pounds in 2017. "I feel really great. I followed [nutritionist] Kimberly Snyder’s methods, but I added some protein like fish and chicken since she's all vegetarian or vegan,” she told Us at the time. “I’ve been very disciplined and all I did was cry and dream about pizza. I still am dreaming and crying about pizza.”

May 2018

In March 2018, two months before this picture was taken, she revealed on The Late Late Show With James Corden that she lets her diet slide in between projects, and a fan thought she was pregnant. “I just looked at her and go ‘No, I’m just fat right now,’” the actress joked. In any case, she wasn’t about to let the critics get her down. “I’m so happy now, and I have such a good thing in my life with my kids and everything,” Barrymore told Us Weekly at the time.

Barrymore credited Marnie Alton of Barre Belle (left) for helping her drop 25 pounds in three months. “You can tell my face is so much thinner! This takes me so much work. Diet and exercise and fighting like a lion for it!” she wrote on Instagram. “I just know that I have the control to be what I want. Even if it is hard AF! At least I know there are experts I can turn to for help. I mean look at what Marnie helped me do in three months! When i have time off in 2019...I’m comin for ya!”
