Ring it on! George Clooney wasn’t messing around when he popped the question to girlfriend Amal Alamuddin back in April. As seen in these photos from pal Rande Gerber‘s birthday party last month, the Gravity star, 53, picked out a massive diamond ring for his bride-to-be.
Alamuddin, 36—a British human rights attorney—has been proudly wearing the huge emerald-cut rock since accepting Clooney’s proposal on April 22. It was on her finger at Gerber’s bash in Santa Monica, Calif., on April 27, and at a party this past weekend in Malibu, where she and her future husband celebrated their engagement with some of their famous friends.
“George seemed sweet with his fiancee,” an onlooker told Us Weekly of the May 11 fete at Cafe Habana, which included guests like Gerber and wife Cindy Crawford, as well as U2’s Bono and The Edge. “They looked very happy.”
They’re not the only ones. Clooney’s dad, Nick Clooney, told Us Weekly that the whole family is “thrilled” to welcome their son’s fiancee into the fold. And Alamuddin’s law firm issued a statement congratulating the couple on their upcoming nuptials.
“She brings a bright light to everything she is involved in, and I am so delighted at her happy news,” Robin Jackson, chief executive of Doughty Street Chambers, said of the engagement, which came just six months after the couple were first spotted out together in London. (This will be the first marriage for Alamuddin, and the second for Clooney, who divorced Mad Men actress Talia Balsam in 1993.)
“It’s actually not that surprising,” a source previously told Us of the proposal. “He likes a woman with brains and class.”
