Caitlyn Jenner was feeling patriotic this weekend, as she sent out a powerful message of appreciation to her fans during the Independence Day weekend.
Sharing an Instagram shot of a star-spangled banner on display in a picture frame, Jenner posted a heartfelt caption that explained why this July 4th was especially poignant for her.
"Happy 4th of July! Proud to be an American … where at least I am free to be me," the former Olympian wrote, referring to the outpouring of positive support that she encountered earlier this year when she transitioned from male to female.
It was the first Independence Day that Jenner has celebrated as Caitlyn. And as she told Vanity Fair in her now infamous magazine article, everything in her life seems to be better now she's found her true identity.
"Even my son, actually, Burt said that to me one time. He goes, 'To be honest with you, I think Caitlyn is a lot better person than Bruce,'" Caitlyn said, referencing her eldest son Burt Jenner, whom she shares with first wife Chrystie Crownover. "And I really have to — I think he's right, because Bruce always had to tell a lie, he was always living that lie, every day, he always had a secret from morning till night. Caitlyn doesn't have any secrets."
