Hillary Clinton may not have won the 2016 presidential election, but she made history on Tuesday, November 8, as the first woman who had come so close to winning the White House. In honor of her historic run, Us Weekly rounded up some more badass women who encourage and inspire others, whether they’re shattering the glass ceiling, winning gold medals or raising awareness for important social causes. Watch the video above to see who made the list!
On Wednesday, November 9, Clinton, 69, delivered her concession speech from the New Yorker Hotel in NYC, in which she asked her supporters to give her Republican opponent and now president-elect Donald Trump “an open mind and a chance to lead.”
Clinton also had a special message for young girls everywhere who may have been discouraged by her loss: “And to all of the little girls who are watching this, never doubt that you are valuable and powerful and deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world to pursue and achieve your own dreams.”
The former secretary of state fought through more than a year of brutal campaigning — and she’s not the only fighter who inspires Us. Shannen Doherty tops the list for staying positive and hopeful since she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. She has bravely documented her cancer battle on social media, even sharing intensely personal moments such as shaving her head.
Meanwhile, in the sports world, the Final Five gymnasts — Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez, Madison Kocian and Aly Raisman — led the U.S. to a team gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The young ladies proved to everyone that strong is beautiful and hard work really does pay off.
Of course, no list of badass women would be complete with Beyoncé. The pop superstar has brought awareness to police brutality through her “Formation” music video and performances at award shows such as the MTV VMAs.
