Jake Gyllenhaal had some very pressing issues he wants to address at the Toronto International Film Festival — namely, fried chicken.
The Demolition star, 34, joked with Us Weekly at the film’s premiere on Thursday, Sept. 10, about once writing a complaint letter to Kentucky Fried Chicken as a kid in hopes of bringing back a particularly delectable menu item.
“It was called, they were like little hamburgers but they were little fried chicken nuggets,” he told Us of his youth advocacy days. “They had a name but I forget the name. They discontinued them and in school we were told to learn how to write a complaint letter. So I wrote a complaint letter to Kentucky Fried Chicken telling them to bring [them back].”
The item that Gyllenhaal was referencing is known as KFC’s Chicken Little, which returned to the menu in 2012 after 20 years.
In Demolition, Gyllenhaal plays an investment banker who loses his wife in a car crash, and eventually finds an outlet for his frustrations via a series of complaint letters.
Naomi Watts stars opposite the Hollywood hunk, as an employee at the customer service department who begins to read Gyllenhaal’s letters.
“It’s empowering and I encourage most people, if they can, to really express themselves and bring back whatever they feel like has been taken away from them in their lives,” he told reporters at a press conference for the film, of the practice of writing complaint letters. “In my case, really important things like fried chicken. Seriously.”
