Never say never. Justin Bieber is still pining over his ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez. The "What Do You Mean?" singer wore his heart on his sleeve while discussing their 2013 breakup during a recent appearance on Access Hollywood.
"It was really tough. I don't know if I'm over it yet," Bieber, 21, told co-host Billy Bush. "I think that I'm definitely in another place and I think we've definitely went our separate ways. I love her and I want her to be awesome, but there are things that remind me of her."
He added: "[She] is someone I love dearly. I'm never going to stop loving her. I'm never going to stop checking in on her. I don’t think if you end a relationship, you should end that, unless it was super toxic and you guys were hurting each other physically or mentally. We always respected each other and we still respect each other."
Bieber and the "Good for You" songstress, 23, were an on-and-off item for three years before calling it quits for good in January 2013. The pair remain amicable, with Bieber even admitting that some songs on his new album, Purpose, were inspired by Gomez.
"A lot of it [is about her]," Bieber told Bush. "Probably, like, three [songs]," he continued, noting that Gomez was his "first real love."
Bieber and Gomez began dating when they were 17 and 19, respectively. Bieber sometimes wishes that they would have met later in life though.
"I wrote a song [that] didn't make the album, it was called 'If I Would Have Met You In 5 Years.' How true is that?" Bieber said. "How many people go through life and end up meeting someone and it feels so right, but it's just the wrong time? So many people can relate to that."
As previously reported, Gomez told Elle magazine that she doesn't know if the two will ever get back together. During Access Hollywood, Bieber shared that same sentiment.
"I don't know what is going to happen in the future," he said. "I think we both have to do some soul searching ourselves and figure out ourselves before we can just try to figure out each other."
